Job summary

Croydon Council is recruiting an Environmental Health Officer to help improve housing standards in privately rented properties across Croydon. This Grade 10–11 role involves inspecting homes and HMOs, assessing hazards and applying enforcement where needed.

You will work across licensing and enforcement, with Grade 11 handling more complex cases and supporting day-to-day team activities. A permanent, 36-hour week contract with progression and generous benefits is offered.

Qualifications

• Degree or Diploma in Environmental Health or equivalent, EHORB registration or ability to achieve full registration within six months.
• Experience of housing work and working knowledge of HHSRS.
• Knowledge of private sector housing legislation, building construction and housing enforcement.
• Ability to identify property defects and appropriate remedial works.
• Confidence dealing with landlords, tenants and other professionals and progressing enforcement cases.
• Full driving licence and access to a car for work.

Responsibilities

• Inspect privately rented homes and HMOs, tackle hazards and use professional judgement to determine action.
• Work across property licensing and housing enforcement, from inspections to notices, penalties and prosecutions.
• At Grade 11, handle more complex casework and support day-to-day team activities.
• Contribute to bringing enforcement when necessary to improve housing conditions.
