Job Description

This role involves interacting with homeless people attending the walk-in centre, serving as the first point of contact. Most service users will have an assigned contact, but the officer must be prepared to cover and support if they are unable to attend.

The key responsibilities include understanding and deciding eligibility and priority, offering advice, and dealing with difficult situations. The day-to-day duties are as follows:

  1. Interview clients and undertake housing needs and homelessness assessments face-to-face within statutory and policy frameworks.
  2. Provide advice, ongoing support, and maintain client contact.
  3. Offer information on all available housing, support, and related services.
  4. Assist clients in accessing specialist support services such as advocacy, tenancy support, equipment and adaptations, and city-wide alarms.
  5. Produce and present reports, including recommendations on aspects of the Housing Solutions Service.
  6. Manage casework effectively and make decisions to prevent homelessness, hospital admissions, and delayed discharges from supported and institutional accommodation and care.

The role is part-time, for 3 days a week, office-based in Sheffield city centre, starting ASAP and running until the end of October. You will receive approximately one week of shadowing and support before working independently. A DBS check is required.

Requirements
  • Good understanding of the housing needs of vulnerable people.
  • Homelessness experience within a local authority or council.
  • Knowledge of housing legislation and relevant laws; experience in homelessness assessments or advice work is desirable.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and manage a busy workload.
  • Experience in building positive relationships with various agencies.
  • Strong customer service skills, including handling difficult customers.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Benefits
  • Competitive hourly rate of £PAYE.
  • Flexible hours available, either full or part-time, Monday to Friday.
  • Office-based role in the city centre with some travel to other sites.
