Housekeeper

Do you want a role that is an integral part of the patient’s journey through the hospital? Do you enjoy being busy and in a role with pace? If yes, then this could be the role for you as an exciting opportunity has come up to join our inpatient ward team as a Ward Housekeeper.

Working on 7B, the successful candidate will work closely with the ward team (nurses, medical staff and allied health professionals) to ensure the patients on our ward receive the highest standard of care on the inpatient unit. The Housekeeper role is patient facing, you will be leading the meal service by helping patient’s complete menus, delivering meals and hot drinks, clearing away meals and helping deliver snacks. You will be responsible for topping up supplies, ordering equipment, cleaning and maintaining clinical equipment, ensuring the ward area is clean, welcoming and tidy along with reporting faults and general admin tasks.

Main duties of the job

This role requires someone who has an interest in nutrition, can work pro-actively, and has excellent communication and organisational skills. The successful candidate must be able to work well under pressure due to the role having competing demands at times. The post holder will need to be computer confident and be willing to undertake training to be self-reliant in using multiple NHS applications. They must be willing to work with the dietitians to ensure that patients meal choices and nutritional intake is appropriate for their requirements.

Shifts are 11.5 hrs per day and will be covered on a rotational basis, covering 7.00 am – 19:30 pm and to include some weekend and bank holiday working.

Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities

  • To encourage and assist patients to order food, where necessary taking into account special needs and medical requirements as directed by ward staff.
  • To ensure people have any assistance they require to eat and drink and to monitor food

intake in conjunction with the ward nurse.

  • To prepare and serve hot/cold snacks (e.g. breakfast) as requested – offering a 24 hour snack service.
  • To serve meals in conjunction with the nursing team, ensuring patients’ intake is known and that their dietary needs are met.
  • To provide eating assistance, e.g. cutting up food, placing food within reach/ feed patients and providing friendly encouragement to patients with regards to eating.
  • To prepare hot/cold beverages including appropriate trolley/equipment regularly at scheduled times.
  • To ensure all regenerated meals and beverages are served at the correct temperature according to food hygiene regulations and Trust operational policy.
  • To prepare areas where food and beverages are served/consumed to ensure a pleasant environment for patients.
  • To wash all equipment/utensils used in preparation, regeneration, serving and consuming food and beverages at breakfast and on beverage rounds.
  • To check that the ward kitchen is clean and tidy at all times, e.g. discarding out-of-date food and stock rotation beyond the daily clean by the patient support team (PST).
  • To ensure refrigerated food is labelled and stored correctly in accordance with Trust operational policy.
  • To ensure in conjunction with the ward nurse that discharged and newly admitted patients’ meal requirements are actioned.
  • To co-ordinate extra meal requirements that may arise.
  • To ensure that patients whose fluid intake is not medically restricted have access to fresh water.
