Job summary

Matalan is seeking an Assistant Designer to support seasonal ranges and translate trend insights into commercially viable product. The role works closely with Designers, Buying and Merchandising to shape assortments and ensure timely delivery.

You will participate in trend research, mood boards, and market analysis, while developing your own skills across concept to store execution. A strong homeware background and creative software proficiency are essential.

Qualifications

• Proven experience as a Trainee or Junior Designer.
• Homeware experience essential.
• Experience across short, medium and long-term timelines in a retail setting.
• Experience in a fast-paced omni-channel retail environment.
• Commercial awareness with ability to spot trends and opportunities.
• Analytical and problem-solving capabilities for product decisions.
• Skilled in design software to bring ideas to life with precision (Adobe Creative Suite, CAD, AI).
• Ability to present ideas clearly to stakeholders.
• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Responsibilities

• Support development of seasonal ranges and manage defined product areas.
• Collaborate with Designers and Buying to build balanced assortments.
• Assist product development through the supply base, supporting quality, cost and delivery.
• Attend selection, sign-off and fit sessions and handle follow-up actions.
• Build understanding of trade performance to inform future ranges.
• Work with Design, Buying, Merchandising, Technical and Marketing teams.
• Maintain clear communication with the supply base under guidance.
