Tradewind Recruitment is seeking an exceptional Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join our team, dedicated to supporting vulnerable young people in Scunthorpe's Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) schools. If you're an experienced professional with a passion for alternative education and a strong desire to create meaningful change in students' learning and overall well-being, we want to hear from you.

About the Role & What You'll Do:

SEMH schools in Scunthorpe provide crucial support for students who have faced significant barriers in mainstream education and require a highly tailored and therapeutic approach. As an HLTA in these dynamic environments, your role will be multifaceted, deeply rewarding, and involve a higher level of responsibility. You will be actively involved in:

  • Leading Learning & Intervention: Delivering pre-planned lessons and interventions to small groups or individual students, ensuring they access the curriculum and make significant academic progress. This includes reinforcing learning, developing essential skills in core subjects, and adapting materials to meet diverse needs.

  • Managing Challenging Behaviours & De-escalation: Utilising your advanced understanding of SEMH and other complex needs to apply proactive strategies, build strong rapport, and effectively de-escalate challenging situations. You'll empower students to self-regulate and make positive choices, fostering a calm and supportive learning environment.

  • Fostering Engagement & Participation: Employing creative, adaptive, and therapeutic strategies to make learning accessible and enjoyable, helping students who may be disengaged to reconnect with their education and thrive.

  • Creating a Nurturing & Inclusive Atmosphere: Building strong, trusting relationships with students, acting as a consistent and positive role model, and ensuring a supportive environment where every student feels valued, safe, and understood.

  • Contributing to Holistic Development: Supporting not only academic progress but also students' social, emotional, and mental health through structured activities, positive reinforcement, and consistent guidance, often linked to therapeutic approaches.

  • Collaborating & Communicating Effectively: Working as a key part of a dedicated multidisciplinary team alongside teachers, therapists, and other professionals. You'll play a vital role in implementing individualised education plans (IEPs) and Education, Health, and Care Plans (EHCPs), communicating student progress and challenges effectively, and contributing to whole-school planning.

  • Supporting Teacher Planning & Assessment: Assisting teachers with planning, preparing resources, and contributing to the assessment of student progress.



You Will Have:

  • Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) status or equivalent qualification.

  • Prior experience working with children or young people with SEMH, ideally within a specialist SEMH school, Alternative Provision (AP), or Pupil Referral Unit (PRU) setting.

  • A strong understanding of various Special Educational Needs (e.g., SEMH, ASD, ADHD, learning difficulties) and effective, therapeutic strategies for support.

  • Hold a valid Enhanced DBS on the Update Service or be willing to obtain one.

  • Two obtainable professional references that can attest to your suitability for this role.

  • Demonstrated flexibility and adaptability, with a willingness to travel to different SEMH provisions across Scunthorpe as required.

  • An open-minded, resilient, and committed approach to supporting children with a wide range of differing learning abilities and behavioural needs.
