About us
We are seeking motivated and hardworking highway operatives with extensive experience in laying tarmac and kerbs for schemes and/or large repair and maintenance works. You will join a highly active and diverse Highway Services Construction Team completing repairs of various sizes or undertaking footway and highway schemes daily.
You will work alongside other highway operatives, street lighting operatives, and gully crews to deliver highway functions and schemes. The service is responsible for keeping the highway safe for all road users. The role offers a generous pension, annual leave, local government benefits, and potential overtime.
About the Role
As a Highway Operative, you will apply your tarmacking and kerbing skills as part of a team working on live highway sites. You will work outdoors from 8am to 4pm, performing routine and reactive maintenance such as pothole repairs, kerbing, and drainage, using machinery including rollers, breakers, and compactors. You will set up and remove temporary traffic management systems safely, complete job records, report defects, and collaborate with team members and supervisors to deliver high-quality services.
You will drive 7.5T vehicles and work with various operatives depending on the work required. As a representative of Salford, professional behaviour reflecting our values is essential. Some weekend work and out-of-hours call-outs may be required, paid as overtime.
About you
You should have skills and experience in laying tarmac and kerbing for highway repairs and maintenance, with experience working on live highways and understanding health and safety requirements. We seek someone who fits well within the team, demonstrates a commitment to development, and works effectively for the City Council.
