Job summary

Northumberland County Council is seeking a Skilled Highways Operative to lead or be part of a team carrying out highways repairs and maintenance across the county. The role includes pothole repair, drainage work, concrete and structural tasks, and traffic management.

You will work with safety regulations, read drawings, log work details, and may rotate to out-of-hours duties for winter and emergency responses. A valid UK driving licence and Level 2 qualification are required.

Qualifications

• Valid UK Driving Licence.
• Ability to understand complex spoken and written instructions and plans.
• Experience in highways and construction is desirable.
• Knowledge of health and safety regulations.

Responsibilities

• Lead or be part of a team to carry out highways repairs and maintenance.
• Excavate damaged surfaces, repair potholes, lay asphalt/tarmac, and manage traffic control on site.
• Install, clean and repair drainage, gully pots and manholes.
• Operate hand tools and machinery required for highway works.
• Read technical drawings and logs, ensuring accurate records and on-site safety compliance.
