Job summary

VolkerHighways is seeking a Highways Operative for our Term Maintenance Contract based at our depot in Chichester, West Sussex. You will perform varied highways maintenance tasks, operate plant and assist with winter duties, under safe and quality standards.

Experience in civils helps, as does NRSWA/SWQR or willingness to train. A full UK driving licence is preferred, and you’ll work as part of a collaborative team with direct labour and subcontractors.

Qualifications

• Experience in highways maintenance, construction or civils is preferred.
• NRSWA or SWQR qualification is required or desirable.
• Confident in operating plants and hand tools.
• Strong team player with reliable work ethic.
• Comfortable working outdoors in all weather conditions.
• Full UK driving licence; HGV desirable but not essential.
• Willingness to undertake training (e.g., NRSWA, CSCS, winter duties).

Responsibilities

• Carry out a variety of highways maintenance tasks including kerb laying and footway works.
• Carry out drainage repairs and installation.
• Perform asphalt and patching works and other civils/groundworks.
• Operate mechanical plant and machinery (training provided).
• Support out-of-hours call-out and winter maintenance operations.
• Collaborate with direct labour and subcontract partners to hit targets.
• Maintain tools, equipment and vehicles to a safe, clean condition.
