Job description

Highways Inspector – South East London – £24.75 per hour (Umbrella)

A South East London Local Authority is seeking an Interim Highways Inspector to join their Highways & Transport team. This role is a great opportunity to contribute to the safety and upkeep of the borough’s highway network, ensuring a high standard of service delivery for residents and road users.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Carry out visual inspections of the borough’s highways network to identify safety defects, deterioration, or third-party damage.
  • Raise works orders for the Council’s contractors or serve defect notices to utility companies in accordance with statutory requirements.
  • Monitor the quality and timeliness of repair works to ensure compliance with specifications.
  • Provide a public liaison service, dealing effectively with enquiries and complaints from residents, contractors, utility companies, and elected members.
  • Ensure all inspections and reports are accurately recorded and comply with the Council’s systems and procedures.
Experience Required:
  • Demonstrable experience in highway maintenance and/or utility company operations.
  • Experience in developing and implementing working practices to support statutory functions.
  • Proven ability to handle contentious issues involving the public, contractors, and councillors, with diplomacy and professionalism.
Essential Qualifications:
  • NRSWA 1991: Accredited in accordance with the Qualifications of Supervisors and Operatives Regulations.
  • LANTRA Highway Safety Inspector Training: Accredited and up to date.
