Job description

Highway Maintenance Operatives – Queensferry/Bonnyrigg/St Boswells/Eyemouth/Lochgelly
  • Location: Bonnyrigg, Eyemouth, Lochgelly, South Queensferry, St Boswells

Opportunities have arisen in the South East for Highway Maintenance Operatives.

The South East Trunk Road Unit spans 506km through some of the busiest sections of the country, from central Scotland through the Scottish Borders. It includes routes such as the Edinburgh City Bypass, as well as a large section of the M8 connecting Edinburgh to Glasgow.

Preferably you should be an experienced roadworker with the necessary skills to carry out various road maintenance operations; training can be provided if necessary. Ideally, you should have an LGV Class 2 Licence (HGV2) and be prepared to participate in our winter and emergency response service on a standby rota basis.

Responsibilities and Activities

  • The erection and removal of temporary signs and barriers (permanent signs and barriers).
  • Hot material patching by hand.
  • Drainage works, excavation, pipe laying, kerb laying, scrub cutting.
  • Installation and fixing of temporary/permanent road furniture.
  • Operation of power tools, small plant, and machinery.
  • Driving vehicles including those with simple attachments such as tractors.
  • Provide support for specialist roadworkers.
  • Responsibility for the health and safety of the public, colleagues, and yourself.
  • Participating in standby and winter maintenance rota.
  • Winter maintenance duties which include fitting gritter body and plough, operating winter maintenance vehicles and footway tractors.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • There is a requirement to undertake training and to achieve competence in aspects of the job.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety rules and procedures.
  • Physically fit for working in sometimes arduous conditions.
  • Experience of using small plant.
  • Holding tickets for plant, traffic management, and Health and Safety is an advantage.
  • Full UK driving license preferably at LGV Class C level.
  • Experience of working to tight deadlines and working under pressure.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team.
