Job Description:

A fantastic opportunity has arisen to join BEAR Scotland's SE Operations team as a Highway Maintenance Operative.

The South East Trunk Road Unit covers 506km through busy areas from central Scotland to the Scottish Borders, including routes like the Edinburgh City Bypass and part of the M8 connecting Edinburgh to Glasgow.

The Highway Maintenance Operative, reporting to the Operations Manager, should be an experienced roadworker with skills for various road maintenance tasks. Training can be provided if necessary. A minimum requirement is an LGV Class 2 Licence (HGV2), and participation in winter and emergency response standby rota is expected.

This is a full-time role.

Role includes:

• Erection and removal of temporary signs and barriers.
• Hot material patching by hand.
• Drainage works, excavation, pipe laying, kerb laying, scrub cutting.
• Installation and fixing of road furniture.
• Operation of power tools, small plant, and machinery.
• Driving vehicles, including those with attachments like tractors.
• Supporting specialist roadworkers.
• Ensuring health and safety of the public, colleagues, and oneself.
• Participating in standby and winter maintenance rota.
• Winter duties: fitting gritter body and plough, operating winter vehicles and footway tractors.

Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

• Training and competence achievement in job aspects required.
• Knowledge of health and safety rules and procedures.
• Physically fit for arduous conditions.
• Experience with small plant.
• Tickets for plant, traffic management, and H&S are advantageous.
• Full UK driving license, preferably LGV Class C.
• Experience working under deadlines and pressure.
• Teamwork, problem-solving, flexibility, adaptability, interpersonal, planning, and organizational skills.
