Job description

BEAR Scotland is a leading provider of highway maintenance services across Scotland. We manage and maintain over 2,000km of Scotland’s trunk road network, tackling various tasks and working round the clock to keep Scotland moving.

The North West Trunk Road Unit covers approximately 1,422km of trunk roads through scenic parts of the country, including 1,501 bridges and structures such as the Kessock Bridge on the A9 north of Inverness, and the A87 Skye Crossing.

This unit spans a vast area from Thurso and Wick in the Highlands to Campbeltown in Argyll and Bute, and from Uig on Skye to Perth and Stirling in the central belt.

The Highway Maintenance Operative, reporting to the Operations Manager and Supervisor, should ideally be an experienced roadworker with skills in various maintenance operations. Training can be provided if necessary. The role requires participation in winter and emergency response standby rotas.

This is a full-time position.

Responsibilities and Activities
  1. Erecting and removing temporary signs and barriers.
  2. Preparing, applying, compacting, and removing soils, rocks, coated, and other materials.
  3. Performing hot material patching manually.
  4. Conducting drainage works, excavation, pipe and kerb laying, scrub cutting.
  5. Installing and fixing temporary and permanent road furniture.
  6. Operating power tools, small plant, and machinery.
  7. Driving vehicles, including those with simple attachments like tractors.
  8. Preparing written reports, including fault details.
  9. Supporting specialist roadworkers.
  10. Ensuring health and safety for the public, colleagues, and oneself.
  11. Participating in standby and winter maintenance rotas, including fitting gritter bodies and blades, driving gritters, and spreading salt as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Experience
  1. Willingness to undertake training and achieve competence in various aspects of the job.
  2. Understanding of health and safety rules and procedures.
  3. Physical fitness to work in sometimes arduous conditions.
  4. Experience with small plant machinery.
  5. Tickets for plant operation, traffic management, and health and safety are advantageous.
  6. Possession of a full UK driving license, preferably LGV Class C.
