Do you have an interest working with young people within theYouth Justice Service? Do you have experience working with young people withcomplex communication difficulties/social, emotional and mental health issuesand/or neurodevelopmental difficulties. Do you enjoy working with a range ofother professionals?

Weare looking for an enthusiastic and skilled Speech and Language Therapist toprovide cover for the current postholder, who will be going on maternity leavesoon

In this role youwill deliver Highly Specialist Speech and Language assessment for young peopleknown to the Youth Justice Service to inform them, their families/carers andthe people around them of any identified communication difficulties. You willthen provide appropriate training, therapy, advice and support to the youngperson and their family/carers, working alongside a range of otherprofessionals.

Youwill work within a friendly and supportive team, with access to ongoing CPD andregular supervision.

Main duties of the job

In conjunction with the SLTTeam Leads and Youth Justice Service Lead, you will plan, develop and deliver theSpeech and Language Therapy service to children with speech, languagecommunication needs known to the Youth Justice Service. There is a strongsupport and advisory element within this role.

Job responsibilities

To assess and diagnose speech,language, communication needs (SLCN) for young people accessing YJS includingthose with special educational needs and those in care.

To develop and advise onstrategies to support young people with SLCN accessing YJS. This includesworking with young people and with the people who live and work with them on adaily basis.

Where appropriate and inagreement with the young person, to develop and implement highly specialistspeech and language therapy treatment and programmes and to measure andevaluate outcomes.

To ensure that clients /parents or carers / YJS staff /teachers are involved in the planning andprioritisation of the treatment programmes wherever possible.

To demonstrate clinicaleffectiveness by use of evidence based practice and outcome measures

To produce reports, reflectinghighly specialist knowledge, in a format that is easily understood by the youngperson. Reports will include summary of strengths and needs and functionalstrategies for daily living.

To contribute to legaldocuments such as Education Health and Care Plans and Court Reports.

To adapt practice to meetindividual clients circumstances, including due regard for cultural andlinguistic differences.

To maintain up to date andaccurate case notes in line with RCSLT professional standards and local trustpolicies (notes inputted into YJS patient management system as agreed withBridgewater Information Governance Team)

To share information withclients, carers and other professionals, observing data protection guidelines

To contribute highlyspecialist knowledge to multi and uni disciplinary teams to ensure a clientfocused approach to treatment. To attend high risk review meetings asrequested.

To communicate complexinformation from highly specialist assessment and treatment to clients, carersand other professionals.

To make onward referrals asappropriate.

To work closely with clients,carers and other professionals to negotiate and agree client management.

To demonstrate empathy withclients, carers and colleagues, ensuring that effective communication isachieved, particularly where significant barriers to understanding exist.

To respond sensitively at alltimes particularly when imparting potentially distressing information regardingthe nature of the clinical difficulties and their implications

To demonstrate expert skillsin motivating clients, carers and other professionals to engage in theassessment and therapeutic process.

To demonstrate expertskills in managing conflict within the clinical highly specialist area

Person Specification
Qualifications
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree or equivalent
  • Health Care Professions Council RCSLT Licence to Practice
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses up to masters level equivalent
  • Registered member of the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists
  • Membership of Relevant Special Interest Groups
Sponsorship

Experience
  • Relevant experience at a post graduate level
  • Experience within specialist area including SEMH/ Neurodevelopmental difficulties/ ACEs and Trauma Informed care.
  • Experience in planning and providing care to children and young people independently.
  • Previous experience working with Youth Justice services.
