Job description
Overview

Band 7 fixed term for 11 months, speech and language therapy position specialising in deafness. The post holder will work across a range of ages and settings (0-19 years) with babies, children and young people with various types and degrees of deafness. You will join a well-established community integrated therapy team and be supported by a specialist in deafness alongside experienced speech and language therapists, an Occupational Therapist and a Physiotherapist. The role includes line management of one staff member and providing clinical supervision to band 5 or band 6 SLTs.

The integrated therapy team has a person-centred, evidence-based, participation-focused approach. You will be joining a multi-disciplinary team for deaf CYP in Tower Hamlets, working closely with teachers of the deaf. A total communication approach is used where all modes of communication are valued; the use of sign language (BSL) is actively encouraged and experience of using sign is valuable.

Main duties

The Community Children and Young People Therapy Service sits in Specialist Community Children's Services and offers an integrated community-based therapy service to the children and young people of Tower Hamlets, delivered predominantly in schools, pre-school settings, clinics and service users’ homes.

This role provides highly specialist clinical assessment and intervention for children from birth to 19 years with significant hearing loss in one or both ears. The post holder will contribute to the wider team clinically and through line managing a small number of staff. They will work jointly with key deaf professionals in the borough (e.g., teachers of the deaf and deaf instructors) to support children and families. The team advocates for the use of sign language and has a total communication approach with a good understanding of the deaf community.

Multi-disciplinary working is integral, as is teaching and training around the specialist areas of communication disability. The post-holder will participate in the education and training of student SLTs and other health professionals, including medical and AHP teams.
