Job description

Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, Head and Neck Cancer

For the full Person Specification and more information regarding the main responsibilities of this role, please refer to the attached Job Description.

Speech and Language intervention in the head and neck cancer patient population requires advanced specialist knowledge and skills. The caseload is varied and complex, ranging from early-stage oro-pharyngeal and laryngeal cancers to advanced disease and cases requiring second opinions.

Treatment is broad and usually multi-modal, involving surgery, radiotherapy (proton and photon), chemotherapy, and/or protein therapy. The patient profiles are diverse, from teenagers and young adults to geriatric patients.

Specific diagnostic procedures are used by speech and language therapists to define impairments caused by the disease and its treatment. These procedures inform intervention strategies and highlight the most appropriate therapeutic techniques for rehabilitation of speech, swallow, voice, and respiration.

Speech and Language Therapists within the Head and Neck team are specialists dedicated to this area. The post holder is responsible for providing a Speech and Language Therapy service within this team and will report directly to the Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapist for Head and Neck.

In line with the Trust's philosophy, these services are at a tertiary level, acting as a resource for multidisciplinary care providers in secondary level services. The post involves working as part of an MDT, contributing to the assessment, management, and treatment of referred patients, including those with highly complex and rare head and neck conditions.

The post holder will be based at UCH, providing inpatient and outpatient services.

Job Purpose

To provide a high standard of Speech and Language Therapy to patients with highly complex and rare head and neck benign and malignant diseases as an autonomous practitioner. Staff are guided and supported by the Clinical Lead and Consultant Clinical Specialist Speech and Language Therapists.

Our organisation is driven by strategic objectives and organisational values, and we seek individuals who align with them. Our team is close-knit and collaborative, offering excellent mentorship, professional development opportunities, a comprehensive induction, and regular clinical supervision. We also have a rich weekly CPD program to promote skill and knowledge enhancement.

Annual leave starts at 27 days plus bank holidays, pro-rated. The role complies with Agenda for Change terms and conditions.

This position involves working with children and/or vulnerable adults; successful candidates will be required to apply for a Disclosure.

You will be part of a team of 16 Speech and Language Therapy colleagues based at UCH.
