Highly Specialist Speech and Language Therapist ENT

Key job responsibilities
Service Delivery
- Prioritize and manage a large and diverse caseload, ensuring practice aligns with the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists' Position Papers, Quality Guidelines, and HCPC regulations.
- Develop, deliver, and monitor highly specialist interventions for patients within the defined pathway, covering complex diagnosis and management of swallowing and communication issues.
- Independently manage and prioritize own complex caseload in a highly specialist area.
- Collaborate with various agencies and professionals across primary and secondary care, social services, and the voluntary sector.
- Plan, provide, monitor, and evaluate learning and development programs for other professionals within the clinical area.
- Represent the Speech and Language Therapy service at delegated forums as directed by the ENT SLT clinical lead.
Clinical Practice
- Provide independent, highly specialist SLT assessments, diagnosis, interventions, and advice to patients with voice, swallowing, and communication impairments within ENT pathways, including support for families and staff.
- Interpret diagnostic assessments (EEL, FEES, Videofluoroscopy) in line with RCSLT competency and clinical banding.
- Offer clinical opinions and recommendations for complex patients in joint clinics, including voice, neuro-laryngology, and airway clinics, with supervision from pathway leads.
- Manage a range of clinical voice/vocal fold movement disorders, utilizing instrumental assessments and therapeutic interventions.
- Manage patients with swallowing disorders, recognizing complications and working with multidisciplinary teams to ensure best practice and safety.
- Develop skills in assessment and management of complex surgical airway patients, including pre- and post-surgery evaluations, with supervision from pathway leads.
Clinical Leadership
- Provide training and supervision to junior staff, students, and assistants.
- Delegate tasks appropriately to support staff.
- Identify and contribute to team objectives aligned with health and social care priorities.
- Implement relevant policies and contribute to strategic planning.
Clinical Governance
- Monitor and assess the competencies of junior staff and assistants.
- Maintain a specialized knowledge base.
- Identify and minimize risks, maintaining relevant registers and reports.
- Contribute to clinical governance activities, including incident and complaint reporting.
- Participate in regional or national clinical networks.
Research, Learning & Development
- Ensure service delivery is evidence-based.
- Develop and evaluate training programs for staff, including student placements and supervision.
- Undertake research or audits to contribute to evidence building.
- Maintain ongoing professional development.
