Job description
Overview

The Paediatric Tier 3 complications in excess weight (CEW) service uses a holistic approach to treating conditions related to obesity in children and young people. Young people will receive 12 to 18 months of intensive treatment from the MDT with the aim of improving health complications linked to their weight. Referrals to CEW for young people aged 2–18 years are based on the degree of obesity and the presence of comorbidities.

The post will support the Nottinghamshire out-patient clinics based at NUH and will also provide virtual support (and occasional visits) to spoke sites including Derby, Lincoln, Boston and Mansfield. There are opportunities to work within the community (home and school visits) to promote inclusivity for CEW patients, encouraging physical activity and reducing sedentary behaviours.

The advertisement details a part-time post: 0.5 WTE (18.75 hours). We require cover on a Thursday and the remaining two days (ideally Friday and Tuesday/Wednesday). A minimum of 0.4 WTE (15 hours) will be considered. There are also opportunities to support planned paediatric in-patient weekend rosters and to be an integral member of the Children’s Therapy team based in the Nottingham Children's Hospital at the QMC campus of NUH.

Responsibilities
  • Act as an expert clinical advisor within obesity and provide assessment and treatment advice to Children, Young People and their families who attend the East Midlands CEW Clinics.
  • Deliver a structured education program to a cohort of CEW patients.
  • Provide education and training within the MDT.
  • Work within an experienced MDT (including consultants, clinical fellow, dietitian, social worker, specialist nurse, clinical psychologist, family support worker).
  • Collaborate with the Leicestershire Physiotherapist to identify, develop and provide innovative ways to address obesity among our young population; participate in service evaluation to demonstrate service success.
  • Potentially supervise a Band 4 Physio Assistant Practitioner.
  • Contribute to data collection, analysis and presentation within the pilot CEW service for national and local reporting.
  • Support the Nottingham Children’s Hospital in-patient and out-patient services; promote high-quality care across settings.
Work Environment and Collaboration
  • Work in partnership with multidisciplinary teams within NUH (notably the Children’s Therapy team) and with colleagues across spoke sites.
  • Engage in joint work with colleagues in physiotherapy to enhance obesity interventions for young people.
  • Be part of a diverse range of AHP and support staff contributing to high-quality care guided by Chief AHP leadership.

The Nottingham Children’s Hospital (NCH) is based at the Queens Medical Centre campus and is part of Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust (NUH). We provide in-patient and out-patient care for children up to age 19, with 97 beds and a broad range of services including planned and emergency care, Burns and Plastics, Neurology, Oncology, Paediatric critical care, Renal conditions and transplantation, and Spinal and Orthopaedic care.

The Children’s Therapy team at NCH works closely with the wider MDT to deliver evidence-based care and innovative approaches. NUH employs a diverse range of AHP and support staff, led by our Chief AHP to steer strategic direction.
