Overview

The South West Plexus Team (SWePT) is a new UK regional specialist centre for the treatment of brachial plexus injuries and complex peripheral nerve injuries. The unit manages emergencies from acute trauma and referrals for chronic problems (e.g., nerve compressions including thoracic outlet syndrome) and nerve tumours in the upper and lower limbs. The SWePT team is composed of Surgeons, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists and a CNS. Our vision is to provide evidence-based, collaborative and compassionate care within a supportive team environment.

Main duties

The Highly Specialist Physiotherapist in SWePT will deliver an enhanced level of practice and clinical leadership within the patient pathway. They will work with the wider MDT to guide local services and deliver care regionally. They will actively participate in and lead service evaluations and audits, with opportunities for research.

Job responsibilities
  • The post holder will work with the whole team to oversee the day-to-day running of the SWePT team.
  • They will co-lead the Multidisciplinary (MDT) Brachial Plexus outpatient clinics and will be line managed by the Consultant Physiotherapist in Brachial Plexus Injury.
  • They will act as a clinical leader to plan, co-ordinate, deliver and evaluate the physiotherapy service for Brachial Plexus and Peripheral Nerve injuries.
  • They will support the MDT in service delivery, including management of referrals, participation in clinics, and making onwards referrals as required.
  • Provide autonomous, advanced physiotherapy assessment, treatment, advice and education for patients, carers/families and staff within the Brachial Plexus Injury, Thoracic Outlet and Peripheral Nerve Injury outpatient clinics.
  • As Physiotherapy Lead within the MDT, provide specialist advice on holistic management strategies and work with Consultants and the local/regional MDT to formulate management plans.
  • Provide training and education to other healthcare professionals (physiotherapists, occupational therapists, hand therapists and students) and act as an expert resource within the SWePT service.
  • Deputise for the Consultant Physiotherapist as appropriate.
Person specification

Education/Training/Qualifications

  • Essential: HCPC registered Physiotherapist
  • Essential: Evidence of post-graduate training in neuro-musculoskeletal rehabilitation, neuro-disability, upper limb disorders and/or peripheral nerve injury (including hand therapy or thoracic outlet syndrome)
  • Desirable: Member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and relevant Clinical Interest Group
  • Desirable: MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice (completed or in progress)

Work Experience

  • Essential: Experience in the management of nerve injury or upper limb disorders (including MSK/neuro UL/hand therapy)
  • Essential: Experience delivering service change and improvement/audit/research initiatives
  • Desirable: Experience of working with traumatic injuries

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities

  • Essential: Leadership experience
  • Desirable: Counselling and advocacy skills to support staff, patients and carers
