Highly Specialist Cardiac Physiologist/Clinical Scientist

Weare looking to recruit a number of Highly Specialist Cardiac Physiologists /Clinical Scientists at Band 7 level to join our Cardiac Ultrasound team atLeeds Teaching Hospitals Trust.

Thisis a fantastic opportunity to join a dynamic and forward-thinkingBSE-accredited department, dedicated to supporting team development anddelivering the highest standard of care to service users

Thesuccessful candidates will hold Level 2 BSE Adult Transthoracic Accreditationand be capable of independently practising at an advanced level inechocardiography. They should be confident in the use of advanced imagingmodalities, including speckle tracking and global longitudinal strain (GLS),and able to provide imaging support for transoesophageal echocardiography(TOE) and stress echocardiography.

Theywill apply their expertise across a range of advanced physiologist-ledspecialist clinics at Leeds and be committed to ongoing professionaldevelopment that enhances both their role as a sonographer and the widerservice. Strong day-to-day leadership skills are essential, as is awillingness to contribute to service development initiatives and collaborateclosely with the Service Manager in delivering both practical and theoreticaltraining.

Main duties of the job

Thepost holders will be responsible for performing and reporting a wide range ofspecialist echo procedures. They will demonstrate the ability to makeaccurate and reproducible measurements, independently interpret findings, andproduce reports to the highest standards.

Thecontinuous development of advanced echocardiographic skills will besupported, with training provided to facilitate active participation inestablished physiologist-led services; ICC, valve and stress echo.

Thepost holders will take ownership of a sub-specialty within the service andexpected to lead, motivate and develop small teams within their area ofexpertise.

Aspart of the senior team, the post holders will contribute to the day-to-dayorganisation of service delivery and play active roles in the departmentsextensive audit, quality assurance, and governance programmes.

Applicantsshould be well-organised, adaptable, and dependable, with the ability to workeffectively under pressure. Strong prioritisation and teamwork skills areessential, along with a commitment to supporting the development of juniorstaff.

Theechocardiography department has a strong role in education and training,contributing to student programmes and the development of multidisciplinaryhealthcare professionals from both within and outside the organisation. Therewill be opportunities to assist in designing training plans and deliveringboth practical and theoretical teaching.

ClinicalDuties

To be professionally and legallyaccountable for all aspect of own work, including the management of patientsin your care.

Routinely undertakes assessment ofboth in-patients and out-patients prior to a range of CardiologicalInvestigations and uses own discretion in order to ensure the patient issuitable for the investigation.

Gives lead specialist advice duringhighly complex situations where analytical judgement is required to all othermembers of the multi-disciplinary team including consultant physicians.

Carries out all aspects of clinicalwork as approved by their Line Manager.

Lead Specialist in own clinicalfield. Implements change in own specialist area based on own experience andevidence-based practice.

Works within and towards nationalguidelines and directives, e.g., BSE guidelines.

Works as an autonomous practitionerwithin established departmental policies and those recognised byinternational organisations.

Communicates with all members ofthe multidisciplinary team to ensure the best possible care for patients,including: negotiating, reassurance, empathy, and persuasiveness.

Communicates sensitive informationabout routine and complex cardiac investigations to patients andrelatives/carers and those with learning and/or physical disabilities.

Calibrates and manipulates a widerange of complex, expensive, technical equipment which process, create,update and store information.

Performs / provides factual reportson a number of the following investigations on a region-wide range of Cardiacand Medical patients including acutely ill patients and elderly patients andthose with a range of physical and learning disabilities:

- Transthoracic Echocardiography(TTE)

- 3D/4D Echocardiography

- Strain/speckle Echocardiography

- Cardiac Resynchronisation Therapy(CRT)

- Physiologist Led Stress Testing

- Sonographer Led Valve Clinic

- Support for TransoesophagealEchocardiography

- Support for InterventionalCardiology

Reports equipment faults inaccordance with departmental policy.

Demonstrates personal duty of carefor safe use of expensive and highly complex equipment. Is responsible forensuring that others are fully trained in the safe use of such equipmentwithin their specialist area.

Responsible for maintenance ofstock levels by ordering from pre-agreed tender schedules and by seeking newresources as service demands change.

Responsible for day-to-day securityof expensive equipment, e.g., portable ultrasound machines, TOE probes.

Professional

Responsible for maintaining owntechnical competencies in clinical areas.

Responsible for reporting clinicalincidents and adverse events to the Service Manager, e.g., ultrasound probeheating / Datix.

Maintain state registration.

Responsible for formal mentorshipand coordination of training for designated staff in training within ownspecialist area.

Provides highly specialist trainingon a day-to-day basis for doctors and cardiac physiologists.

Be an active member of thein-service training programme by attendance at, and participation in,in-service training programmes, tutorials, individual training sessions,external courses and peer review.

Undertakes Continuing ProfessionalDevelopment (CPD) in accordance with Personal Development Plan (PDP) asdeveloped with Line Manager.

Attends and participates indepartmental staff meetings.

Maintains and develops currentknowledge of evidence-based practice in each clinical area.

Responsible for the implementationand evaluation of capital and consumable equipment prior to purchase toensure the equipment fulfils both service requirements and budgetrestrictions.

Frequently undertakes collection ofdata for use in audit, research projects and equipment testing.

Regularly undertakes clinicaltrials involving new and emerging technologies.

Regularly provides training inHighly Specialist Cardiological techniques to staff members includingspecialist physiologists and medical staff.

Collaborates with the ServiceManager towards changes that may impact the wider service provision.

Organisational

Ability to prioritise and organisethe clinical caseload within a designated area of Cardiology. Includesplanning and organisation of expected and acute workload and deployment ofmore junior staff within that area.

Accountable for the delivery andday to day management of the delegated area of responsibility within theirspeciality.

Effort

Required to exert moderate physicaleffort. Frequent transferring of patients and equipment on both trolleys andwheelchairs. Prolonged MSK activity whilst performing ultrasound scans.

Is forced to deal withconfrontation from industry representatives who can be demanding andintrusive.

There is a frequent requirement forprolonged periods of concentration. Occasional requirements for bothprolonged and highly intense levels of concentration.

Frequently interrupted duringclinical work to give highly specialist advice to peers, physicians and takesurgent calls from other sources, e.g., staff at other hospitals within theregion whom are seeking urgent advice.

Exposure to highly distressingsituations, e.g., cardiac arrhythmias, anaphylaxis, respiratory and cardiacarrest.

To comply with the Trusts manualhandling policy at all times.

Frequent exposure to unpleasantworking conditions on a regular daily basis e.g.: bodily fluids includingblood, sputum, vomit, urine, fleas and lice.

Occasional exposure to highlyemotional situation away from own clinical area, e.g., having to performechocardiography as part of assessment for organ retrieval.

Occasional exposure to verbal andphysical aggression.

Frequently deals sensitively withpatients who have high levels of anxiety and aggression caused by pain,dementia or limited mobility.

Experience
  • Minimum 2 years at band 6 level with BSE TTE Accreditation level 2
  • Proven experience and expert knowledge in Echocardiography
  • Competent to perform and report a full range of advanced echocardiographic procedures
  • Delivered formal theoretical and/or practical training in echocardiography
  • Active involvement with the BSE committee

Qualifications
  • Cardiac Physiology BSc, Cardiac Science MSc (STP) or relevant degree with ETP qualification or HNC/MPPM with qualifying long service and clinical experience
  • Registration with the AHCS/HCPC or ability to gain registration within 6 months (reviewed at interview)
  • Level 2 BSE TTE Adult Accreditation and active professional membership
