Job description

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a HighlySpecialist Applied Psychologist within Young Minds Matter (CAMHS) children incare team. We are expanding and seek a motivated individual who is committed toimproving the lives of children in care. The team provides a full range ofinterventions, ranging from brief advice and information right through tocomplex mental health treatment. We are a small team and work closely with ourcolleagues in social care. Its a great time to join us as we are developingour offer and we have some exciting new projects in progress.

Main duties of the job

Thepostholder will play a key role within the multi-agency partnership to ensurethorough oversight and understanding of the needs of children who reside inplacements external to North East Lincolnshire. The individual will developpsychologically informed formulations to support appropriate placementrecommendations as part of the multi-agency approach.

The role will involve providing psychologicaladvice and support to the professionals around the child, including residentialstaff and social workers. The postholder will provide specialist psychologicalassessments and interventions for children and young people. The individualwill be involved in the provision of training to other professionals as well ascontributing to the development of new training packages. Frequent attendancewill be required at multi-agency meetings in order to contribute to systemicthinking within the network and to contribute to multi-agency care planning.

Job responsibilities

To provide highly specialistpsychological support, advice, and clinical supervision / consultation regardingchildren and young people (CYP) in care, and care leavers, who would benefitfrom a psychological perspective regarding their needs and how to best supportthem.

To use their highlyspecialist psychological formulation skills and understanding oftrauma-informed care, to support CAMHS practitioners working with Children inCare to develop needs-led psychologically informed formulations and care plans.

To provide highly specialistpsychological support and consultation to residential homes, foster carers andprofessional networks.

To work autonomously andcollaboratively within the multidisciplinary team around the child, providingconsultation, advice, guidance, support and teaching to other agencies/ professionalssuch as local authority social workers.

To provide highly specialistpsychological assessments and therapeutic interventions for young people whoare looked after by the local authority, and to care leavers, includingchildren and young people living in residential childrens homes and fosterplacements.

To provide psychologicalsupport to children and families who are experiencing (or have experienced)serious emotional trauma, bereavement, relationship difficulties or placementdisruption, and also to provide support to parents, carers and staff workingwith such clients.

To formulate psychologicaltreatment plans that are specific to each child and family, based upon ananalysis of complex factors concerning historical and developmental processescontributing to the presentation, and selectively drawing on appropriate conceptualand theoretical models.

To facilitate multi-agencyconsultations and contribute to systemic thinking within complex networkssupporting young people who are looked after or are care leavers.

To select and administerhighly specialist psychological assessments including specialised psychometricassessment (including skilled manipulation of test material),neuropsychological assessments, self-report measures, as appropriate),structured observations, clinical interviews, and to interpret and integratethis highly complex data.

To provide written summariesand reports to the multidisciplinary team around the child following assessmentand consultation.

To provide ad-hoc support andadvice to local authority staff and carers

To be responsible forensuring clinical outcome data is routinely entered and appropriately collated.

To lead on and contribute toservice development work

To deputise for the ClinicalLead for children in care when needed, for example, by attending panel meetingsand operational meetings for children in care with local stakeholders.

To work closely with theConsultant Clinical Psychologist to support the embedding of trauma-informedcare and the Attachment, Regulation and Competency (ARC) framework into routinepractice in the Children in Care Team and wider local authority teams.

To provide clinical andmanagerial supervision to less experienced staff.

To assess and monitor riskand draw up appropriate risk management plans. To provide general advice toother professionals on risk assessment and management.

To communicate in a skilledand sensitive manner, information concerning the assessment, formulation andtreatment plans, and to monitor and evaluate progress during the course ofcare.

To provide clinicalsupervision for doctoral trainees and assistant psychologists and to continueto develop skills in the area of professional post-qualification teaching,training and supervision of other staff in the delivery of psychologicalservices

To ensure the systematicprovision of a high-quality psychology service, by providing strong, effectiveprofessional direction, ensuring the delivery of evidence based psychologicalinterventions and practice.

To continue to demonstrateadvanced psychological skills in practice and provide support and adviceregarding service development / development and implementation of highlyspecialist psychological interventions and the delivery of the highest qualityof care in collaboration with service users, carers, staff, managers and, otheragencies across a number of teams/geographical areas.

Offer clinicalleadership in respect of psychological aspects of the service, coordination andmanagement, as agreed by the head of the speciality.

Person Specification
Knowledge
  • Highly specialist knowledge of assessment tools and therapeutic interventions relevant to client group and settings, and an ability to compare and contrast relative benefits underpinned by evidence based practice.
Experience
  • Extensive post qualification experience working as an Applied Psychologist with children and families.
  • Extensive post qualification expertise in maintaining multi-professional and multi-agency partnerships.
  • Extensive post qualification experience of providing reflective supervision or specialist consultation/ training and advice within the service they work and/or partner agencies.
  • Expertise in applying a trauma informed approach to working with children / young people with mental health needs.
  • Experience of being involved in service development and contributing to policy planning.
Qualifications
  • Post-graduate training (doctoral level equivalent) in clinical / counselling / forensic / educational / health psychology as accredited by the BPS.
  • Trained in clinical supervision and the supervision of doctoral trainees.
  • Additional specialist training related to working with children, young people and their families and carers.
  • Additional qualification in relevant therapeutic interventions / approaches e.g. DBT, IPT, CBT, IFS, PBS, family therapy or systemic practice, EMDR, DDP / Theraplay.
  • Leadership teaching / qualification
