Highly Specialised Speech and Language Therapist

Are you an experienced adult Speech and Language Therapist looking for a new challenge?

Main duties of the job

We are looking to recruit a positive, reliable, and motivated Speech and Language Therapist to join our therapies team. You will be a senior figure in the SALT team, providing the highest quality assessment and rehabilitation to inpatients with a range of cardio-thoracic conditions. You will have the opportunity to support patients on critical care as well as on our surgical and medical wards, as an integral member of the team you will be encouraged to take a lead in areas of interest, contributing to weekly ITU MDT meetings, staff and student training and influencing policies and guidelines.

We offer a responsive FEES service for identified inpatients alongside a weekly video fluoroscopy clinic therefore some experience and competency in instrumental assessments is essential. Experience and competency in managing patients with tracheostomies is also an essential requirement.

Job responsibilities

We can offer you:

Opportunities to supervise band 6 Speech and Language therapists and students and close working with the MDT across all settings.

Regular exposure and opportunities to utilise competencies in FEES, critical care and tracheostomy management. Including the opportunity to upskill in areas as required.

A small and friendly team with strong emphasis on CPD, clinical audit, service improvement and research.

Regular working hours (Monday Friday). Therapy services are moving towards 7 day working therefore some weekend working may be required.

Person Specification
Qualifications & Education
  • Recognised Speech and Language Therapy degree qualification or equivalent
  • Health Care Professional Council Registration
  • Registered Member of Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists or equivalent
  • Evidence of successful completion of specialist short courses up to Master's degree equivalent
  • Membership of relevant Special Interest Groups
Knowledge & Experience
  • Relevant experience at undergraduate/post graduate level
  • Relevant experience post qualification of working as a Specialist Speech & Language Therapist, within an acute setting.
  • FEES competent to level 2a
  • Experience working with tracheostomy and ventilated tracheostomy patients
  • In-depth experience managing complex dysphagia.
  • Competent to independently manage tracheostomy and ventilated tracheostomy patients (RCSLT Tracheostomy Framework completion)
  • Experience of working in cardiothoracic care.

  • Good auditory discrimination skills and ability to transcribe speech phonetically
  • Demonstrates ability to be a good team member and develop leadership responsibilities
  • Well established knowledge of a broad range of assessment tools and therapeutic interventions relevant to the specialist client group
