Overview

We have a new full-time vacancy for a band 8a Highly Specialised Clinical Physiologist on the Sir Jules Thorn Telemetry Unit at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery. The position will have lead responsibilities for private patient telemetry on Bloomsbury ward and our home video-EEG telemetry service. The post holder will support the Lead Clinical Physiologist in delivering a highly complex, specialist Clinical Neurophysiology service to meet service users’ needs.

The telemetry team provides the full range of video EEG services including private patient studies, at-home polysomnography and diagnostic videotelemetry, diagnostic studies, pre-surgical epilepsy studies including ictal SPECT, invasive studies (with subdural and depth SEEG electrodes), electrocorticography, polysomnography, MSLT and actigraphy.

The Sir Jules Thorn Telemetry Unit is a self-contained unit for monitoring patients with neurological, neurosurgical and neuropsychiatric conditions, performing more than 510 video-EEG telemetry studies and over 150 actigraphy studies per year.

Responsibilities

Your main responsibilities for the Private patient and HVT services will be:

  • To perform and report the full range of highly specialist and complex video-EEG telemetry studies.
  • Assist the Lead Clinical Physiologist with formulating policies and procedures to meet changing healthcare needs, trust policies and national/international guidelines.
  • Provide out-of-hours support and advice on technical issues via telephone and remote access to nursing staff, jointly with the Lead Clinical Physiologists.
  • Ensure the safe and correct operation of all telemetry equipment on the unit.
  • Communicate highly complex clinical and technical information relating to neurophysiological investigations with medical staff from the telemetry team and other departments.
  • Communicate information to the reporting consultant to ensure timely reporting of telemetry data.

Experience

  • Essential: Experience in clinical Neurophysiology with practical experience in the full range of investigations, including the most complex investigations carried out on the unit (e.g., scalp video EEG with EMG, intracranial EEG with depth/grid/strip electrodes; polysomnography is desirable). Involves assessments in unit and operating theatre, plus preparation of complex factual reports.
  • Desirable: Polysomnographic recording or invasive EEG studies with underpinning knowledge of these procedures.
  • Able to demonstrate knowledge of a broad range of Clinical Neurophysiology concepts and the theory behind investigations.

Skills and Abilities

  • Able to use computerised databases and a wide range of specialist software, including report writing and interpretation software used with telemetry data.
  • Able to analyse and interpret data from various sources and utilise ICT systems and EHRs.

Communication

  • Able to communicate effectively with patients, including those with communication difficulties or challenging behaviour, and with consultant medical staff and other healthcare professionals.
  • Desirable: Ability to train and inform visitors about the department and run training for less experienced staff.

Personal and People Development

  • Experience in supervising and training less experienced clinical physiologists and continued professional development.
  • Ability to assist senior staff in managing a team, including rotas and resource planning.
