About the Role

We’re seeking an experienced Higher Scientist to join our team at the National Physical Laboratory in Teddington, UK. This role involves working on the development of microcombs, which are revolutionary in fields such as astronomy, health monitoring, telecoms, lidar, radar, and gravity sensing with portable optical clocks.

We offer a hybrid working model, combining remote and office work, with flexible options to promote work-life balance depending on the role and business needs.

As a key member of our team, you will collaborate with leading scientists and engineers to commercialize microcombs and integrate them into innovative technologies like portable optical clocks and multispecies trace detectors. You will also have opportunities to publish in high-impact journals and present at international conferences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to pioneering science and disruptive technology development
  • Develop and maintain partnerships with academia and industry
  • Act as an ambassador for our work, promoting our capabilities externally

About You

We value diversity and encourage applications from underrepresented groups in STEM, including women, disabled, black, Asian, and minority ethnic candidates.

You will report to a Senior Scientist and be responsible for developing chip-based microcombs and their applications, utilizing your analytical and technical skills to advance photonic integrated circuit technology.

Essential skills and qualifications include a PhD in experimental physics focusing on optics, 2-3 years of relevant experience with lasers and optical setups, strong communication skills, and a proactive attitude.

Highly desirable skills include programming in Python and LabVIEW, optical mode simulation, RF circuit design, familiarity with microfabrication, and CAD experience.

We review applications and conduct interviews on an ongoing basis, so early applications are encouraged.
