About the role

Higher Level Teaching Assistant – Newport
Start date: September 2025 (trial days available before the summer break)

Are you an experienced Higher Level Teaching Assistant ready for your next rewarding opportunity? We are currently seeking enthusiastic and committed HLTAs to join a number of inclusive, forward-thinking primary schools across Newport. If you’re passionate about supporting children’s learning and development, this role could be an ideal next step.

Role Overview

As a Higher Level Teaching Assistant, you will play a key role in supporting learning across the classroom. You’ll lead lessons in the teacher’s absence, provide focused support to pupils in small groups and individually, and contribute to creating a positive, inclusive learning environment across the Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2. Your experience and knowledge will help pupils of all abilities make meaningful progress in their learning.

Key Responsibilities

Confidently lead whole-class lessons when the teacher is absent, ensuring pupils remain engaged and on track

Provide tailored in-class support to help children access and understand their learning

Work directly with pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) or Special Educational Needs (SEN) to support their progress

Promote positive behaviour and help foster a calm, inclusive atmosphere in the classroom

Deliver one-to-one and small group interventions in line with individual learning plans

Prepare classroom materials and organise resources to support high-quality teaching

Assist with the smooth running of the classroom, including general management and maintaining clear expectations

Who We’re Looking For

Proven experience as a Higher Level Teaching Assistant in a primary school setting

A Level 4 qualification in Supporting Teaching and Learning, or equivalent experience

A calm, adaptable approach, particularly when supporting pupils with behavioural or additional learning needs

Confidence working with children with ALN or SEN, and a genuine commitment to helping them succeed

Excellent communication skills and a strong team ethos

A desire to continue growing professionally through ongoing development

Requirements

A Level 4 qualification (or equivalent experience) in Supporting Teaching and Learning

An enhanced DBS registered to the update service, or willingness to obtain one

Good understanding of the primary classroom environment and experience supporting children with a range of needs
