Main duties of the job

You will work within a multidisciplinary team, supporting patient care, assisting with medicines reconciliations, and ensuring timely discharge processes. There will be opportunities to support nursing staff with medicines management, audits, and training.

To maintain pharmacy technician competencies and develop your skills, you will support dispensary services on a rota basis.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Under the direction of the Specialist Pharmacy Technician Manager, you will:

  1. Develop and maintain safe medication supply systems for in-patient areas.
  2. Liaise with ward staff regarding prescription issues, complete incident reports, and participate in medicines management services.
  3. Supply compliance aids, including complex medication regimes.
  4. Organize and supervise pharmacy dispensers, assistants, and other technicians.
  5. Assist in clinical trials and staff training related to dispensing.
  6. Accurately supply dispensed medication for various patient groups, including discharge and outpatient services.
  7. Support medicines reconciliation and medication usability assessments at ward level.
  8. Maintain accurate records on clinical systems.
  9. Organize medication supply and monitoring within the trust.

Additional duties include dispensing, liaising with patients and clinical teams, processing blood results, and updating stock records.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services and BTEC Level 3 in Pharmaceutical Science, or equivalent.
  • Accredited Technical Accuracy Checking Qualification.
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council as a Pharmacy Technician.

Desirable criteria

  • Willingness to pursue further qualifications (e.g., BTEC/NVQ Level 4 Clinical Diploma).
  • Experience as an A1 workplace assessor or willingness to obtain this.
  • Relevant medicines management qualifications or equivalent experience.

Knowledge/Experience

  • Ability to train others.
  • Relevant pharmacy experience, including dispensing and accuracy checking.
  • Experience with electronic medicines management systems.
  • Understanding of legislation and guidance.
  • Commitment to CPD and self-development.

Additional desirable experience

  • Hospital pharmacy experience, ward work, NHS experience, supervisory experience, mental health knowledge, and experience in mental health medications.
