Job description

We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Higher Biomedical Support Worker to join our busy, friendly laboratory for a one-year fixed-term post.

The successful candidate will work in the Blood Sciences Specimen Referral Service (SRS) at the Bedford site, supporting Biomedical Scientists and Senior BMSs as needed.

The department holds UKAS accreditation, IBMS/HCPC training status, and is one of the few with Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, & Transfusion Science National School of Healthcare Science accredited training.

We are committed to expanding our services through on-site testing and integration with other services.

Core working hours are Monday to Friday, 08:40 – 17:10.

The post holder will be responsible for:

  • Preparing, packaging, and dispatching SRS samples to reference laboratories in accordance with SOPs and statutory regulations.
  • Entering patient results into the Laboratory Information Management System.
  • Providing training to staff where appropriate.
  • Contributing to daily operations and technical aspects of the service.
  • Assisting BMS and senior BMS staff in delivering a high-quality, efficient service through the QMS.
  • Following policies and procedures to ensure compliance with UKAS standards, legislation, and regulatory bodies.
  • Assisting in training support staff.
