Job summary

Balfour Beatty seeks an HGV recovery driver for the Dartford area, responsible for recovering vehicles on the M25 Network. About the role

Balfour Beatty Highways has an opportunity for an HGV recovery driver based at Dartford, Kent. We are looking for a highly skilled professional who operates Heavy Goods Vehicles (HGVs) to effectively recover, tow, or transport vehicles that are broken down, damaged, or involved in accidents on highways and roadways. As an expert you adept at handling large, heavy vehicles such as trucks, buses, and other commercial fleets, excelling in the management of complex recovery operations of the M25 Network.

Your vital role encompasses promptly responding to recovery requests and coordinating specialist assistance at the scene of road-related incidents, hazards, and collisions. With your expertise, HGV recovery drivers ensure the safety and swift restoration of mobility on our roads, making them an essential resource in times of crisis.

Working arrangements

  • Expected to work the shift pattern (days, nights, weekend and bank holidays) to meet operational requirements
  • Shift pattern is 4 shifts on, 4 shifts off, to include weekends and bank holidays
  • Reasonable level of travel around M25 network and between depots
  • Travel to meetings, training and works sites outside normal operational area
  • Expected to participate in out of hours working to fulfil Winter Maintenance

What you'll be doing

  • Provide Recovery response and arrange specialist advice at the scene of road related incidents, hazards and collisions.
  • Attend incidents and work safely in accordance with agreed CPS policies, method statements and risk assessments to facilitate the prompt clear up of stricken vehicles.
  • Undertake activities to ensure that your area of responsibility is maintained. This will include but not exclusive to:
    • debris and safety patrols/inspections,
    • graffiti removal
    • carriageway repairs,
    • soft estate maintenance (eg grass),
    • litter picking,
    • sign maintenance,
    • cleansing
    • Any other duties allocated by Line Managers.
  • Implement Heavy and light vehicle recovery in line with CPS policies, method statements and risk assessments.
  • Provide accurate and legible written and verbal communication in the form of reports and records as required.
  • Use mobile communication/data devices to accurately input data for record purposes to form reports and business records as required
  • Undertake routine vehicle and equipment checks, maintain accurate and up to date driving records in line with legislation in accordance with CPS procedures.
  • Taking due care of any CPS property including but not limited to tablets, vehicles and airwave radios.
  • Raise awareness of issues which may affect the safe operation of the network and report these as observed.
  • Check that equipment and materials carried on vehicles in line with current recovery vehicle checklists are serviceable and in good working order, restock, record and report defects as appropriate.
  • Participate in Winter Service rota as required
  • Attend training courses as required

Who we're looking for

Qualifications (Essential)

  • UK Driving Licence, minimum category C+E (LGV Class 1)
  • IVR 1,2 and3
  • Driver Qualification Card
  • CSCS Operative Card
  • Appropriate manual handling qualification
  • Appropriate lifting qualification

Experience

  • Recovering heavy and light vehicles on a live motorway or All Purpose Trunk Road (APTR) network
  • Proficient in the safe working practices of recovering heavy and light vehicles using full range of equipment on the recovery vehicles, underlift, winch, crane etc
  • Experience of working in a similar traffic / transport / highways / recovery role are preferred.

Essential Criteria

  • Successfully pass the Security check as part of recruitment process
  • Successfully pass the annual driving license check
  • Successfully pass pre employment Drug & Alcohol test and further test upon request
  • Successfully pass the Company's health screening programme
