Job summary

VanRath Search & Selection is seeking an experienced HGV Driver for a public sector client in Downpatrick, Northern Ireland. The role involves delivering waste and recycling services using Category C1 vehicles, with a focus on safety and reliability.

The position is a 3-6 month contract with potential extension, offering an hourly rate of around GBP14–GBP14.52 and opportunities for training and progression.

Qualifications

• Valid Category C1 driving licence.
• CPC/ Driver Qualification Card held.
• Minimum 1 year experience operating with a Category C1 licence.
• Working knowledge of health & safety procedures (manual handling, reversing).

Responsibilities

• Drive and operate Category C1 vehicles to support waste collections and environmental services.
• Supervise and support crew members to ensure safe, efficient operations.
• Carry out routine vehicle checks, maintenance and safety reporting.
• Assist the public at Household Recycling Centres and maximise recycling opportunities.
• Collect domestic, commercial, bulky and recyclable waste, ensuring safe handling.
• Support other frontline services during adverse weather or emergencies.

Our public sector client is seeking an experienced and motivated HGVDriverto join their Operations team. This is an excellent opportunity to work within a well‑structured organisation delivering essentialfrontlineservices to the community. This will be an initial 3-6 month contract with great likelihood of extension.

The Role

As a Waste Resource Management Driver, you will play a key role in delivering high-quality waste and recycling services across the borough. Duties include:

Driving and operating specialist vehicles (CategoryC1) to support waste collections, street cleansing, and environmental services.

Supervising and supporting crew members to ensure safe, efficient operations.

Carrying out routine vehicle checks, maintenance, and safety reporting.

Assisting the public at Household Recycling Centres and maximising recycling opportunities.

Collecting domestic, commercial, bulky, and recyclable waste, ensuring safe handling and adherence to service standards.

Supporting otherfrontlineservices during adverse weather or emergencies (e.g., gritting and snow clearance).

About You

We are looking for individuals who can work both independently and as part of a team, with strong organisational and customer service skills.

ValidCategoryC1licence.

FullCPC/ Driver Qualification Card.

Minimum 1years' experienceoperating with a CategoryC1licence.

Working knowledge ofhealth & safety procedures(manual handling, reversing assistants).

Ability to work with minimal supervision, demonstrating initiative and reliability.

• Current valid driving licence minimum C1+ E

Previous experience in the waste management sector, particularly refuse collection and recycling.

Experience operating mechanical sweepers.
