Job description

Are you a HGV Driver with a class 2 license? Are you looking for a new opportunity and don't mind driving to Stornoway? We have a fabulous opportunity for you so please read on (please note this role doesnt have to be based in Stornoway as long as you dont mind travel to there).

We are supporting one of our clients in the recruitment of a HGV Driver who will be responsible for the safe, legal and timely transportation, collection and delivery of raw materials and finished products as instructed by the Group Transport & Logistics Manager.

The role requires a strong commitment to health and safety, excellent timekeeping and a professional approach to customer service. The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring that the vehicle, load and all associated documentation are maintained to the required company and legal standards.

Reporting Structure

Report directly to the Group Transport & Logistics Manager you will work closely with the Transport and Operations teams to ensure the efficient movement of goods.

Key Duties & Responsibilities
Driving & Legal Compliance
  • Operate HGV vehicles safely and responsibly in accordance with all relevant legislation and company procedures.
  • Comply fully with tachograph legislation, drivers' hours and Working Time Directive requirements.
  • Ensure all journeys are completed safely, efficiently and within scheduled delivery and collection times.
  • Monitor traffic reports and amend routes where necessary to minimise delays.
  • Maintain a high standard of professional driving and road awareness.
Vehicle & Load Safety
  • Ensure vehicles are correctly and safely loaded and that all loads are adequately secured to minimise the risk of damage, injury or loss.
  • Carry out daily vehicle safety and defect checks before use.
  • Report any defects, non-conformances or mechanical faults immediately to the Transport/Operations Manager.
  • Ensure the vehicle is treated with care and is not subjected to unnecessary damage or misuse.
  • Maintain the cleanliness of the driver's cab and vehicle exterior.
  • Have a good understanding of basic HGV vehicle maintenance and safety requirements.
Deliveries & Documentation
  • Complete all scheduled collections and deliveries in a timely and professional manner.
  • Complete delivery notes, collection documentation and other relevant paperwork accurately.
  • Maintain accurate records of mileage, fuel usage and any other costs incurred.
  • Ensure all completed documentation is submitted promptly and in accordance with company procedures.
  • Report any accidents, incidents or damage as soon as reasonably practicable.
Health, Safety & Training
  • Follow all company Health & Safety, environmental and operational procedures.
  • Follow safe manual handling practices and relevant company guidelines.
  • Attend all mandatory and essential training required to undertake the role safely and effectively.
  • Attend meetings as required.
  • Promote a positive safety culture and demonstrate a commitment to environmental responsibility.
General Responsibilities
  • Adhere to all company policies, procedures and standards, including operational, technical, Health & Safety and Human Resources requirements.
  • Work flexibly to meet changing business and operational requirements.
  • Support colleagues and other departments as required.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties requested by the Transport/Operations Manager or other senior managers, provided these are within the individual's capability and competence.

Working Conditions

The role requires a willingness to work shifts and travel throughout the UK. Overtime, weekend working and varied shift patterns/rotations may be required to meet operational demands. The role may involve loading/unloading activities and the manual handling of goods in accordance with company procedures.

Qualifications & Experience
Essential:
  • Hold a valid Class 2 HGV driving licence.
  • Demonstrable experience working as an HGV Driver.
  • Good knowledge of UK roads and geographical areas.
  • Good understanding of HGV vehicle safety and maintenance requirements.
  • Familiarity with standard vehicle and material-handling equipment, such as pallet trucks.
  • Understanding of drivers' hours, tachograph and Working Time Directive requirements.
Desirable:
  • Previous experience in a transport, logistics, food production or distribution environment.
  • Experience operating different types of HGV equipment.
  • Relevant driver CPC and ongoing professional driver training.
