Job description

Peterson is looking for a Class 1 driver. The primary responsibility is to operate transport vehicles as directed by the line supervisor, including loading and unloading vessels, trailers, containers, or other duties as assigned in accordance with training and competency measures.

Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Participate in toolbox talks as required to ensure all relevant personnel are aware of the job tasks prior to commencement.
  • Empowered to stop work if an action is unsafe and report it to the line supervisor.
  • Conduct daily vehicle safety checks as per operator guidelines.
  • Ensure driving skills meet the standards of driver assessor audits, competency units, and licensing requirements.
  • Keep accurate records of daily work and tachograph charts for a minimum of 28 days and up to 42 days (analogue). Download digital tachograph details regularly.
  • Collect and deliver loads to and from vendors/customers safely and punctually.
  • Secure loads properly, ensuring they are double strapped at all times.
  • Provide and receive appropriate paperwork for deliveries and collections.
  • Inspect straps, ratchets, and other equipment for defects and report any issues promptly.
  • Transport dangerous goods in accordance with ADR regulations, if applicable.
  • Maintain professionalism during all driving duties, whether on the road, on Peterson's premises, or at vendor and client locations.
  • Load and discharge vessels, trailers, containers, and backloads (where certified OPITO).
  • Communicate effectively with Boat Foreman and Quayside Supervisor as needed.
  • Assist with backload cargo dispatch, ensuring compliance with company procedures.

Requirements

  • LGV Class 1 license
  • ADR certification for dangerous goods carriage (not essential)
  • Forklift license and cargo handling experience (if applicable)
  • Driving experience preferred
  • Digital driver card (preferred)
  • Ability to promote teamwork, flexibility, enthusiasm, and determination.
  • Effective communication skills within the team.
