Job summary

Fowler Welch in Newton Abbot seeks experienced HGV Class 1 drivers for our chilled distribution fleet. You will operate refrigerated articulated vehicles, delivering and collecting chilled stock across the UK, including farms and packhouses.

Shift pattern is Friday to Tuesday for day work, with a guaranteed 50 hours per week and overtime paid at enhanced rates. We offer funded CPC training, healthcare, life insurance, a strong pension, and recognition schemes.

Qualifications

• Possession of LGV Class 1 Licence.
• Current CPC.
• Knowledge of Road Transport Directive and current drivers’ hours.
• Excellent communication skills.
• Ability to work efficiently and accurately under pressure.
• Effectively prioritise workload to meet deadlines.

Responsibilities

• Carry out chilled distribution deliveries to local and regional distribution centres, farms and packhouses.
• No requirement to self-tip; stores handle loading/unloading.
• Collect equipment or returns from customer locations and return to site.
• Report to Transport team at shift start and update on delays or issues.
• Complete all paperwork accurately and ensure PODs are signed and returned.
• Follow company health, safety and hygiene standards.
• Adhere to Road Transport Directive and tachograph rules.
• Perform daily vehicle checks and report defects; responsible for unit and trailer.
• Maintain professional behaviour and customer service at all times.

Job Description

We’re looking for experienced HGV Class 1 Drivers to join our chilled distribution operation based in Newton Abbott. In your role as a HGV Driver, you will be operating refrigerated articulated vehicles, delivering and collecting chilled stock from Local and Regional Distribution Centres as well as Farms and Packhouses across the UK.

Shifts:

Friday to Tuesday Days (Start time between 05:00 and 07:00)

Salary:

• Days – Guaranteed annual salary of £40,580
• Average hourly rate £15.61
• Guaranteed 50 hours per week
• Overtime paid at an enhanced rates

What you'll be doing:

• Carrying out chilled distribution deliveries to local and regional distribution centres, as well as Farms and Packhouses
• No requirement to self tip, Stores responsibility to load and unload
• Collecting equipment or returns from customer locations and bringing them back to site.
• Report to the Transport team at the start of each shift and keep them updated on delays, delivery issues or load discrepancies.
• Complete all paperwork accurately and ensure PODs are signed and returned to the Transport Office.
• Follow company procedures, including health, safety and hygiene standards.
• Manage your working time in line with the Road Transport Directive and tachograph rules.
• Complete daily vehicle checks and report defects correctly and take responsibility for your unit and trailer, including temperature checks where required.
• Maintain a professional standard of behaviour, appearance and customer service at all times.
