About the role

Historic Royal Palaces is a team of people who love and look after six of the most wonderful palaces in the world and their magnificent historical gardens.

We are recruiting for a Heritage Science Laboratory Technician Apprentice, giving you a fantastic opportunity to grow and develop your skills whilst working at these historical sites.

The Heritage Science Laboratory Technician works within the Conservation & Collection Care, and Collections Management (CCC CM) team, providing support in technical investigations using a range of analytical equipment to inform the study and conservation of the collections and historic interiors in the care of Historic Royal Palaces. This role also supports the maintenance of equipment and chemical supplies, to ensure the smooth running of the team while working safely in the Heritage Science Laboratory and following appropriate safety, environment and risk management systems. You will proactively communicate the importance of conservation and heritage science work to both generalist and specialist audiences.

Whilst studying towards your apprenticeship you will also be:

  1. Work safely in the Heritage Science Laboratory maintaining excellent housekeeping whilst following appropriate safety, environment and risk management systems.
  2. Use specified instrumentation and laboratory equipment, including calibration where required and provide routine or one-off testing and technical support.
  3. Produce reliable, accurate data and keep accurate records of laboratory work undertaken and results.
  4. Assist in the delivery of servicing for specialist analytical lab equipment.
  5. Assist in maintaining Health and Safety related documentation.
  6. Assist in maintaining and organising chemical supplies.
  7. Continue to maintain and develop professional knowledge.
  8. Receive training where and when appropriate, attend relevant lectures, seminars and exhibitions and share acquired knowledge.
  9. Work effectively, efficiently and safely with all HRP employees and volunteers.
  10. Be willing to work off site, in public view and at heights when required.
  11. Be an ambassador for conservation, communicating in a friendly and professional way directly with visitors, colleagues and other audiences.
  12. To undertake any other reasonable tasks as requested by your manager.

More than anything we are looking for potential, but, as this Apprenticeship starts at level 3 we do have a few eligibility requirements:

  1. You must be 18 years old or over on 2nd September 2025.
  2. Live in UK (resident in country role is based).
  3. You must not have completed a degree or equivalent level qualification in the UK or elsewhere and not already be in full-time education.
  4. Five GCSEs at grade C (or 4) or above, including English, science/engineering and mathematics (or equivalent).
