Job description

Job Summary:The Heavy Diesel Mechanic is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining heavy-duty diesel engines and related systems in a variety of vehicles and equipment, ensuring safe and efficient operation.Hourly rate will be between $34.00-$40.00ph depending on qualifications/experience.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Perform routine maintenance, inspections, and repairs on heavy-duty diesel engines and vehicles, including trucks.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues in diesel engines and systems, utilizing diagnostic tools and software.
  • Replace or repair worn or damaged parts, including engines, transmissions, steering, braking systems, and more.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on vehicles and equipment, following established schedules and procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records of work performed, parts used, and time spent on repairs.
  • Communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, providing updates on repair progress and addressing concerns.
  • Work safely and follow all safety protocols and procedures, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Follow safety procedures and regulations when working with heavy equipment and hazardous materials.
  • Keep the work area clean, organized, and free of hazards.
  • Maintain a strong knowledge of diesel engine systems, repair procedures, and industry best practices.

Qualifications/Experience:

  • 3 years of experience and A New Zealand National Certificate in Automotive Heavy Engineering Level 4 (or equivalent)
  • Knowledge of diesel engine systems, including fuel systems, ignition systems, and related components.
  • Ability to use diagnostic tools and software to troubleshoot mechanical, electrical, and electronic issues.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and ability to perform repairs and maintenance on heavy-duty diesel engines and vehicles.
  • Proficiency with hand and power tools, including welding and fabrication tools.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and technical manuals.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to safety and quality.
  • You will have a current and valid NZ Driver's License including HT4

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, and reach.
  • Ability to work in a variety of environments, including outdoors and in enclosed spaces.

About you

  • You will have a relevant Level 4 qualification or have at least 3 years proven experience working as a Heavy Vehicle Technician
  • You take pride in quality workmanship and doing things right.
  • You will have a current NZ Driver's License including HT4
  • A forklift licence would be highly desirable
  • Ability to work well within a team and under pressure
  • Strong organisational and time management skills
