Main duties of the job

  1. The delivery of clinical and therapeutic care, within the clinical setting within set protocols and within the scope of the HCSW, under the guidance and supervision of the Registered Practitioner.
  2. Organise and prioritise time and work activities effectively.
  3. Acts on own initiative in delivering patient care with indirect supervision.
  4. Contributes to patient assessment, planning and delivery of nursing care ensuring the highest possible standard under supervision of Registered Practitioners.
  5. Undertakes a range of delegated clinical care duties, records patients observations and collects specimens and samples as instructed.
  6. Ensure care is documented accurately and in a timely manner as per Trust policy and contributes to updating patients records.
  7. Ensure that patients and relatives are treated with courtesy at all times and the individual needs of patients are respected.
  8. Promotes and participates in Health Education.
  9. Maintain confidentiality of all patients and work related issues.
  10. Actively participates in Departmental Team Development and Nursing Team Development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Caring for Patients:

  1. Maintain a courteous and helpful manner at all times.
  2. Welcome patients, relatives and visitors to the department.
  3. Ensure that any care or information given does not go beyond the limit of your skills, training or scope of practice.
  4. Assist with all aspects of patient hygiene needs.
  5. Assist patients to the toilet or give urinals, bedpans or commodes.
  6. Assist patients to mobilise, with or without the use of aids.
  7. Check that all necessary personal effects are within reach of the patient.
  8. Ensure patient’s discomfort/pain is observed and reported to registered nurse.
  9. Assist with the care of the dying patient and their relatives and friends.
  10. Ensure that the patient’s property is handled in accordance with Trust procedures.
  11. Help in the preparation of patients for special treatments.
  12. Be proactive when assisting with patient discharge.
  13. Ensure SystemOne is updated when you are admitting, moving, transferring or discharging patients.
  14. Be aware of the particular nursing needs of the patient.
  15. Transport patients to other departments within the hospital.
  16. To undertake and record patient observations as agreed by person in charge.
  17. Where appropriate assist patients to eat and drink.
  18. Be sensitive to ensure that patient privacy and choice is maintained.
  19. Assist with trolley preparation and ensure that the patient is comfortable.
  20. Ensure that the department areas are clean and tidy.
  21. Ensure all documentation is recorded accurately.
  22. Demonstrate effective communication using basic computer skills.
  23. Be aware of current hospital procedure on Fire and Resuscitation.
  24. Follow safe working practices.
  25. Help patients/relatives overcome barriers to understanding when English is not their first language.
  26. Reporting all complaints and untoward occurrences.
  27. Present a clean smart and professional appearance.
