Applicationsare invited from suitably qualified people who hold the RSPH Level 3 DiplomaAnatomical Pathology Technology (or the RSPH Certificate and Diploma) with aminimum of 2 years post qualification experience for a full-time permanentpost in the Mortuaries in the Department of Cellular Pathology.
Therole involves co-ordinating the day-to-day running of the mortuary service toensure the department provides a high quality hospital mortuary service thatcomplies with ISO15189 and HTA standards.
Thedepartment provides the Mortuary and Postmortem services for the Trust andH.M. Coroner for Leeds from the mortuaries at the Leeds General Infirmary(LGI) and St James's University Hospital at Leeds (SJUH).
Thedepartment operates an out of hours On-call rota for evenings, weekends andbank holidays and participation in this rota will be required.
Thedepartment currently performs circa 1,200 autopsies per year consisting ofboth adult and paediatric examinations; consented, HM Coroner authorised aswell as some Forensic examinations.
Theposition will include rotation, working between the LGI & SJUHmortuaries.
Thedepartment is well equipped, fully computerised and is both ISO15189 and HTAaccredited.
Youwill be required to take on the role of Persons Designate to ensurecompliance in accordance with HTA regulations.
Asa Healthcare Scientist Specialist (Anatomical Pathology Technician) you willbe the lead specialist in the mortuary and as such will lead a group ofanatomical technicians and support staff.You will plan and prioritise the day to day work load of themortuaries. You will also be required to work alone and independently, forexample when working on-call or when performing highly specialized tasks. Youwill be a highly competent member of the department having the advancedknowledge and skills necessary to perform a wide range of specialisttechniques that contribute towards the provision of the mortuary service tothe Trust and to HM Coroner.
Thereis a frequent requirement for concentration when planning for anunpredictable workload, and when performing specialist techniques e.g. anInfection risk autopsy.
Youwill be responsible for contributing to, and implementing policies andprocedures:
relevant to the mortuary servicewhich operates on three sites
relevant to service changes whichimpact externally i.e. portering
services and funeral directors
Youwill be expected to apply professional judgements and specialist skills tocomplex and sometimes emotive situations. E.g. assessing infection risk. You will be required to communicate complexand / or sensitive information to colleagues, clinicians, undertakers, HMCoroner, and HM Coroners Officers.You will demonstrate empathetic skills when communicating withbereaved relatives.
Thedepartment provides Histopathology, Non Gynae Cytology, Andrology, Muscle,Nerve, Immunohistochemistry, Molecular, and Mortuary services for LTHT andsurrounding primary care centres.
Weare a large department processing circa 60,000 surgical cases, 3000 andrologycases, 2,000 autopsy cases and 6000 non-gynaecological cytology cases perannum.
Thedepartment is staffed with a range of professions including Biomedical &MortuarySupport Workers, Associate Healthcare Science Practitioners,Anatomical Pathology Technicians, Biomedical Scientists, AdvancedPractitioner Biomedical Scientists, admin and secretarial staff, pathologistsand a management team.

Inorder to carry out the job sufficiently and effectively you will havesuccessfully studied for a Diploma in Anatomical Pathology Technology(RIPHH).
Inaddition you will have significant experience within the speciality,including a thorough understanding of the range of working practices relatingto advanced autopsy, forensic and infection procedures. You will havedeveloped a range of competencies and specialist knowledge within thediscipline through extensive practical experience, in house training andstructured study and will continue to develop your skills and knowledge. Youwill be expected to have a supervisory management qualification. In addition,basic computer skills are essential to carry out your work.
Tofulfil your other people governance responsibilities you will be required toundergo appropriate HR training, e.g. staff appraisal. As a senior staffmember you may be required to assist in the general management of thedepartment. Any training required for this will be provided.

9. CORE KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
Asa healthcare worker dealing with sensitive (patient related) information theimportance and value of personal honesty and integrity as a commitment topatient service and confidentiality will be recognised.
Incontributing to the quality of the mortuary service you will understand therequirement to continuously develop appropriate skills and accumulaterelevant knowledge whether by formal or in- house training.
Asthe job holder you will acquire sufficient knowledge and understanding to:
- Coordinate the day to dayactivities of the mortuary.
- Perform a wide range of routine andadvanced post mortem procedures including advanced autopsy, forensic andinfection procedures. These procedureswill include the safe and effective use of highly complex laboratoryequipment. Your level of knowledge and understanding of these procedures willbe consistent with that to allow you to recognise system failures and errors.You will understand the need to report adverse events in the event of errorsand failures.
- Teach and train other anatomicalpathology technicians. Demonstrate relevant tasks to others as appropriate.
- Communicate and liaise with staffwithin the Department and with pathologists, clinical staff, bereavementnurses, HM Coroner, HM Coroners Officers, police officers, funeral directorsand bereaved relatives.
- Handle cheques, fees and propertybelonging to the deceased in a secure manner. Maintain stock control andrequisition items as required.
- Have knowledge and understanding ofcurrent national legislation and guidelines relevant to the speciality
- Participate actively indepartmental quality assurance activities. Your level of knowledge andunderstanding will allow you to recognise when expected levels of qualityhave not been met together with the ability to recommend appropriateimprovements.
- Participate in the maintenance of asafe working environment. This will include an awareness of the hazardsassociated with your work. In addition you will be aware of any suitableactions to take in the event of breaches in health and safety. Such hazardsinclude fire, manual handling, breaches of security, controlled anduncontrolled exposure to chemical, biological and radioactive materials.
- Maintain patient confidentiality.You will recognise the absolute requirement to protect sensitive informationthat is related to patient care.
- Observe the requirements ofdepartmental policies relating to service provision, for example samplelabelling and adverse event reporting.
- Observe the requirements of Trustpolicies relating to clinical and people governance.
Toperform a wide range of routine and advanced post mortem procedures includingadvanced autopsy, forensic and infection procedures. These are highlydeveloped physical skills where accuracy is important. Eg dissection andreconstruction of bodies (including facial reconstruction), suturing,evisceration of organs.
- To perform tasks accurately and inaccordance with departmental standard operating procedures.
- To plan the day to day activitieswithin the mortuary, and to provide cover on other sites as required.
- To be conversant with contemporarymethods and aid in the procurement of such equipment as is deemed necessaryfor the service.
- To give professional advice, and tocommunicate accurately sensitive and / or highly complex information to usersof the service in a manner that is in accordance with departmentalprocedures. (Examples of users are: pathologists, clinical staff, HM Coroner,HM Coroners Officers, police officers, funeral directors and bereavementnurses).
- To give professional advice toundertakers and bereaved relatives.
- To communicate with bereavedrelatives regarding sensitive situations, and where there may be barriers tounderstanding.
- To enter, manage, retrieve andinterpret complex patient information using the laboratory computer system.
- To participate in clinical trialsthat are relevant to the section
- To participate in equipment testingand adaptation as a function of service development
- To provide training to support,technical, scientific and medical staff
- To actively participate in thelaboratory quality assurance and risk management programmes
- To participate in laboratory auditprocesses
- To contribute to generaldepartmental management by performing, subject to consultation, such tasks asdelegated by the Mortuary Manager
Thislist is not exhaustive and the changing needs of the service from time totime may require the development of other appropriate tasks and skills. Thesewill be fully discussed with the post holder in advance of theirimplementation.
ThePathology Department of Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is located onseveral sites. Subject to consultation, the post holder may be required towork in a mortuary on an alternative site as required by the LaboratoryManager.
Inaddition the Trust requires compliance with a number of corporate policiesand procedures. These policies will be discussed with your line managerduring your period of induction and further information is available from theTrusts intranet site.
