Job description

As a Band 3 Healthcare Assistant, you will be an integral member of the multidisciplinary team on the Ward, providing high-quality support to registered nurses in delivering care to a range of complex patients. You will work with increasing autonomy under the guidance of senior staff and contribute to the ongoing care and well-being of inpatients.

Your role involves assisting in the care of patients with diverse and sometimes complex healthcare needs, including those with life-limiting conditions, patients at the end of life, and individuals requiring support to prevent unnecessary hospital admissions or enable swift discharge. You will play a key part in ensuring these patients receive appropriate care and support to meet their clinical needs, helping to manage their physical and emotional well-being.

This is a dynamic and varied role where no two days are the same. Working closely with patients and the multidisciplinary team, you will have the opportunity to develop your clinical skills while making a tangible difference to patient care and recovery. The position is full-time (37.5 hours per week) based at Gravesham Community Hospital, where our services continue to evolve to meet the diverse needs of our local population.

This role is part of our comprehensive 24/7 care service operating 365 days a year. You may be required to work day shifts, evenings, nights, weekends, and bank holidays as part of a rota.

Main duties of the job

Within this role, you will:

  • Communicate effectively with the multidisciplinary team, medical, clinical nursing colleagues, and support staff
  • Actively seek ways to improve the quality of the service provided
  • Recognise when to refer to the trained nurse, contribute to assessment and care planning, and communicate concerns expressed by patients or carers to the registered nurse
  • Report changes in patients' conditions to qualified nurses and ensure documentation is accurate. Ensure all interventions are recorded and care plans maintained to standards
  • Actively promote the health and wellbeing of patients attending the department
  • Remove dressings and apply simple dressings when trained and competent
