Overview

This is a great opportunity for Care Assistants to take more responsibility and a role in the Acute Medical Care environment at Frimley Park Hospital. The Acute Medical Unit (AMU) is a 42 bedded busy unit looking after patients with various medical conditions, providing exposure to areas including cardiology, respiratory, gastroenterology, endocrinology, elderly care and mental health. You will work with the nursing and multi-disciplinary team to deliver high quality patient care to patients and relatives. You will be supporting the nursing staff in ensuring all documentation is up to date. Dementia care and acute care skills are essential. You will report any changes in a patient’s condition and help keep your area safe.

Responsibilities
  • Provide professional, competent basic nursing care to patients and relatives without direct supervision.
  • Competently undertake basic agreed clinical activities without direct supervision.
  • Prioritise own workload and make independent minor decisions.
  • Provide health education and promotion to both patients and relatives.
  • Provide basic wound care following training under senior supervision, including aseptic technique, obtaining wound swabs, and application of slings and tub grip.
  • Apply Plaster of Paris under senior supervision following completion of training and evidence of competency.
  • Undertake venepuncture and cannulation duties under senior supervision following completion of training and evidence of competency.
  • Process blood samples through POC machines and ensure blood results are signed by medical staff.
  • Assist in discharge planning and assist patients with hygiene while maintaining dignity.
  • Promote good hand washing techniques in line with infection control policies/protocols.
  • Accurately record patient observations and report findings to the named nurse; accurately record ECGs on completion of training and report back after doctor interpretation.
  • Assist named nurse with care of the bereaved following completion of training.
  • Provide support to all colleagues and act as a role model to junior staff and learners in the emergency department on completion of training.
  • Work with all members of the multi-disciplinary care team and promote good working relationships (including police, ambulance, OT, physiotherapists, doctors, specialist nurses and social services).
  • Raise safeguarding issues to the nurse in charge and observe health and safety regulations; undertake training updates as required by Trust policies.
  • Take responsibility for personal development and undertake update training to meet post demands.
  • Adhere to Trust recommendations regarding PREP and ensure effective communication to promote smooth transition between specialty units/wards and safely escort patients between care environments.
  • Produce clear, factual documentation to standards of the Record Keeping Act and demonstrate excellent telephone communication skills and messenger service.
  • Support patients with COVID swabbing at the earliest opportunity.
Candidate Profile

We are looking for an enthusiastic, full-time Band 3 Healthcare Assistant. Candidates are expected to have experience of 1 year in a hospital environment dealing with the general public. You need to be flexible and able to rotate shifts to cover days, nights and weekends.

Essential Skills
  • Venepuncture, cannulation and catheterisation.
  • Familiarity with EPIC is desirable.
