Job description

Job Summary

The Mandeville Practice, a dynamic and growing practice in Bucks, has an exciting opportunity for a motivated, enthusiastic and experienced Healthcare Assistant to join our team.

The successful candidate would maintain our values of excellent patient care and join our vision of meeting the health needs of our diverse population. Previous experience of working as a HCA in a NHS GP Practice would be advantageous.

The successful candidate would work as part of an excellent administrative and a multidisciplinary clinical team (including GPs, Nurse Practitioners, Nurses, and Clinical Pharmacists).

We aim to develop positive, supportive and professional relationships with every patient, clinician and allied professionals that we come in contact with.

We use Emis Web clinical system.

Working hours: Minimum 37.5 hours per week.

Main duties of the job

To assist in patient care and practice related duties as directed by and under the supervision of a registered healthcare professional. The post holder will work collaboratively with the general practice team to meet the needs of patients, following policy and procedures.

Clinical Responsibilities
  1. Work under supervision of the clinicians in providing patient care
  2. Assist in Minor Surgery Clinics
  3. Run Chronic Disease Management Clinics
Job Description
Primary Responsibilities
  1. Undertake new patient and NHS health checks
  2. Support the practice nurse with health promotion programmes
  3. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately
  4. Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
  5. Undertake wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
  6. Support the practice nurse with the management of chronic disease clinics
  7. Carry out BMI checks as directed
  8. Act as a chaperone as required
  9. When trained, undertake venepuncture
  10. When trained, administer flu vaccinations
  11. When trained, carry out ear irrigation under the supervision of the practice nurse
  12. Carry out ECGs as requested
  13. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
  14. Provide support during minor operations as required
  15. Ensure the clinical area is adequately stocked and prepared for each session
  16. Ensure clinical waste is removed from the clinical area and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the practice IPC policy
  17. Deliver opportunistic health promotion where appropriate
  18. Carry out any other tasks as directed by the lead nurse in support of patient care
Secondary Responsibilities
  1. Participate in practice audit as directed by the audit lead
  2. Participate in local initiatives to enhance service delivery and patient care
  3. Support and participate in shared learning within the practice
  4. Complete opening and closing procedures in accordance with the duty rota
Person Specification
Qualifications Essential
  1. GCSE grade A to C in English and Maths
  2. Qualified to NVQ level 3 in Health and Social Care
  3. Literate and able to perform basic numerical calculations
  4. Fluent in spoken and written English
  5. Ability to accurately receive, record and relay information both verbally and written
  6. Ability to store and retrieve files from numerical, alphabetical and computerised filing systems
  7. Computer skill including working with the EMIS Web clinical system
  8. Ability to work on own initiative
  9. Ability to organise delegated work

The candidate must have:

  1. Health Care Support Experience
  2. Phlebotomy
  3. To have worked within a practice setting
  4. Experience of working as a health care assistant or equivalent
  5. Knowledge of local community and understanding of a multi-cultural, racially diverse population
  6. Awareness of health and safety issues in the workplace
  7. Understanding of the need to keep and maintain accurate records
  8. Understanding of equal opportunities
  9. Understanding of the importance of patient confidentiality and the consequences of breaking confidentiality
  10. Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary, multi-agency primary care team
  11. Polite and helpful manner
  12. Enthusiasm to learn
  13. Openness to explore alternative working practices
  14. Flexible with working hours
  15. Must have Hepatitis B/Covid Vaccine or be willing to undergo a vaccination programme
Desirable
  1. Candidates with both clerical and health care support experience will be at an advantage. Those candidates with only one set of experience must demonstrate a willingness to learn the other set of skills.
  2. Experience of dealing with the public face to face and over the telephone
  3. Fluent in one or more languages in the local community and willingness to use this skill in working with the public
  4. Reception experience
