There is a regular requirement to work night shifts in this position and cover weekend track renewals as the business requires.
This role will visit and support teams at Acton, Ruislip and Lillie Bridge
Overview Of Project/role
As a key member of the newly formed Ballasted Track Team (BTT) — London Underground’s internal delivery organisation for ballasted track renewals — this role is responsible for developing, maintaining, and delivering safety improvements across BTT’s portfolio. The postholder will ensure high SHE standards are embedded from planning through to delivery, supporting continuous improvement in health and safety performance and culture.
The role will collaborate with key stakeholders across delivery and support teams, the SHE community, and operational leadership to drive compliance, best practice, and positive safety behaviours across the track renewal programme.
Key Accountabilities
- Lead the creation and final sign-off of risk assessments (incl. workplace, CoSHH and Manual Handling) in line with LU SHE standards and current legislation.
- Provide specialist SHE support to senior leaders and delivery teams in all areas of incident response, learning reviews, and continuous safety improvement.
- Accountable for developing and delivering the BTT Safety Improvement Programme, aligned with the internal delivery model and focused on zero harm, culture change and continuous improvement.
- Continuously review and report on SHE performance using appropriate metrics to provide assurance, identify improvement opportunities, and drive innovation across all stages of delivery.
- Identify and lead SHE improvement projects with short, medium and long-term impact, ensuring alignment with LU’s SHE vision, policies and regulatory standards.
- Positively represent BTT in engagements with external stakeholders and regulators, ensuring safety expectations are clear, measurable, and consistently met.
- Build strong working relationships with engineering, logistics, and construction colleagues to embed accountability and a positive safety culture at all levels.
- Ensure all SHE-related documentation and processes (e.g. CDM, IE2, CYPOL) are up to date and aligned with TfL systems and expectations.
- Act as a key contact for environmental and carbon-related initiatives within BTT, championing sustainability and leading on measures to reduce waste, emissions and improve operational efficiency.
Skills
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
- Proven ability to identify and solve complex SHE issues using collaborative, evidence-based techniques.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to influence senior stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to lead SHE improvements from concept to implementation, with a focus on operational effectiveness.
- Confident in using SHE data to identify trends, drive action, and deliver improvements.
Knowledge
- Detailed knowledge of SHE legislation, standards and compliance processes.
- Relevant professional qualification (e.g. NEBOSH) and membership of a professional body (e.g. IOSH, IEMA).
- Understanding of LU SHE management systems including CYPOL, IE2 and Maximo.
- Familiarity with rail engineering, maintenance, and asset-related SHE risk. Strong understanding of construction and infrastructure delivery environments.
Experience
- Experience working with delivery teams to embed SHE processes and culture.
- Track record of leading successful SHE improvement programmes within rail, construction, or infrastructure.
- Experience conducting audits, incident investigations, and learning reviews.
- Demonstrable impact on improving safety performance in complex delivery environments.
