Job description

Health, Safety & Facilities Manager

Department: People

Employment Type: Permanent - Full Time

Location: Cambridge, United Kingdom

Description

Are you a confident, hands-on H&S and Facilities professional who loves the satisfaction of a perfectly run site?

At Samsung Cambridge Solution Centre, we operate at the intersection of innovation and precision. We’re looking for a proactive Health, Safety & Facilities Manager to take full ownership of our office and laboratory spaces. This isn’t a role for someone who wants to sit behind a desk all day—it’s for a "doer" who is just as comfortable reviewing high-level safety policies as they are coordinating a courier or managing a critical building alarm.

Joining our People Team means you'll have the support of a friendly, down-to-earth group of colleagues, but the autonomy to run the site your way. If you have a "can-do" attitude, and the confidence to manage everything from landlord relationships to lab compliance, we want to hear from you!

Overview:

This is a standalone, hands-on role combining full Health & Safety ownership with day-to-day Facilities management for our office and laboratory spaces, home to around 150 people. Sitting within our friendly, supportive People Team, you'll be the site's competent person for all H&S matters. You will be equally comfortable writing policies and risk assessments as you are raising purchase orders, booking contractors, or managing the post.

You will own the site's safety, compliance, and operational effectiveness with confidence and autonomy. You'll lead our first aid team, manage the critical alarm rota, and build a strong working relationship with our building landlord. Very occasional out-of-hours attendance is required to meet contractors or respond to critical building alarms, and we offer an excellent benefits package in return.

Key Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Compliance

  • Serve as the on-site competent person, owning H&S management and driving a positive safety culture across office and lab environments.
  • Write, review, and update all H&S policies, procedures, and safe systems of work, ensuring ongoing legal compliance.
  • Conduct and regularly review risk assessments including fire, COSHH, DSE, manual handling, lone working, and new and expectant mothers.
  • Lead accident and near-miss investigations, maintain RIDDOR reporting, and implement corrective actions.
  • Liaise with insurance providers to ensure all required cover is current, adequate, and correctly displayed.
  • Monitor regulatory changes and translate them into practical business updates as required.

First Aid

  • Manage, coordinate, and support the first aid team, ensuring adequate coverage and up-to-date certifications.
  • Undertake First Aid at Work training (fully funded if not already held) to join the physical response team.

Facilities & Building Management

  • Serve as the primary contact for the building landlord, maintaining a strong relationship to ensure all obligations are met.
  • Own the Building Management System (BMS), proactively monitoring HVAC to maintain a stable environment.
  • Test and maintain the fire alarm system and all critical building alarms, and schedule all statutory compliance testing (PAT, fixed wire, emergency lighting, legionella, generator load testing), maintaining accurate records.
  • Act as the primary contact for our outsourced canteen provider, ensuring our in-house equipment is maintained, breakdowns are resolved swiftly, and service standards are met.
  • Administer the parking allocation app and access control.
  • Own and take part in the critical alarm rota, ensuring site coverage, and respond to out-of-hours call-outs when on duty.

Contractor & Supplier Management

  • Act as the primary contact for all facilities contractors and suppliers.
  • Manage contractor visits: review risk assessments and method statements (RAMS) for higher-risk work, issue safety permits where required, and ensure all visiting contractors sign in and are briefed on site safety rules.
  • Monitor contractor performance, addressing shortfalls and escalating where necessary.

Administration & Logistics

  • Develop, review, and update Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure all critical H&S and facilities tasks are clearly documented and consistently followed.
  • Raise purchase orders, track spend, and process supplier invoices.
  • Manage incoming/outgoing post, couriers, and international shipping including customs documentation and Dangerous Goods requirements for lab samples.
  • Ensure the office and lab environment is well-presented, well-stocked, and operationally ready.
  • Maintain an audit-ready filing system for all compliance certificates, maintenance logs, permits, and insurance documents.
  • Keep the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) schedule current, ensuring no statutory tasks are missed.
  • Administer the Specsavers eyecare voucher scheme, issuing vouchers to eligible employees in line with our DSE policy and maintaining accurate records.

Projects & Continuous Improvement

  • Support office moves, lab equipment installations, and space planning projects where required.
Skills Knowledge and Expertise

Required

  • NEBOSH General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety or a similar qualification/experience.
  • Proven experience in a standalone or heavily autonomous H&S and Facilities role.
  • Good applied knowledge of UK H&S legislation and compliance requirements in mixed office/lab environments (COSHH, LEV, pressure systems, fume cupboards, legionella).
  • Experience writing and implementing H&S policies, risk assessments, and safe systems of work.
  • Working knowledge of BMS, fire alarm panels, and critical alarm management.
  • Comfortable with processing administrative tasks such as purchase orders, invoice tracking, and budget administration.
  • Experience managing contractors, reviewing RAMS, and issuing permits to work.
  • Strong relationship-building skills with landlords, managing agents, and external stakeholders.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office.
  • Flexible approach with willingness to attend site out-of-hours on occasion.

Desired

  • Full First Aid at Work qualification (training funded if not already held).
  • Additional NEBOSH qualifications (Fire Safety, Environmental).
  • IOSH Managing Safely certification.
  • IWFM qualification or membership.
  • Knowledge of international shipping, customs, and exports.
  • Personal qualities: autonomous, hands-on, confident to challenge at all levels, resilient, grounded, and a genuine team player who thrives in a friendly, supportive environment.
