About the role

  • Responsible for delivering the health, safety, and environmental risk strategy of the business as set by the Head of Safety & Risk.
  • Implementing ISO certified safety and environmental management systems.
  • Acting as Subject Matter Expert for Smiths News on Health and Safety, Environmental risk, and Safety Culture, including all road transport and operational yard safety at Smiths News and third-party locations.
  • Owning company health and safety policies, training, and audit regimes, ensuring suitable arrangements are in place and managed effectively.
  • Delivering Human Factors and Safety Culture Awareness programs to promote positive behaviors and a just safety culture.
  • Building positive relationships and maintaining dialogue with internal and external stakeholders interested in safety and legal compliance (e.g., HSE, DVSA, Local Authorities, Trade Bodies).
  • Ensuring incidents and accidents are thoroughly investigated by trained colleagues, with appropriate escalation and liaison with emergency services and media when necessary.

About you

  • At least Nebosh Level 3 or equivalent qualification
  • Experience with ISO 45001 and ISO integrated systems
  • Auditing qualifications and experience
  • Environmental risk management qualifications
  • Extensive accident investigation experience including root cause analysis
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with the ability to negotiate and influence at senior levels
  • A valid UK driving license (company car may be provided)
