About the role
  • Responsible for delivering the health, safety, and environmental risk strategy of the business as set by the Head of Safety & Risk.
  • Delivery of ISO-certified safety and environmental management systems.
  • Subject Matter Expert for Smiths News on health and safety, environmental risk, and safety culture, including all road transport and operational yard safety at Smiths News and third-party locations where Smiths News operates.
  • Ownership of company health and safety policies, training, and audit regimes, ensuring suitable and sufficient arrangements are in place and managed accordingly.
  • Responsible for delivering Human Factors and Safety Culture Awareness programs in conjunction with the Head of Safety & Risk, empowering the business to embrace and embed positive behaviors reinforced through a just safety culture.
  • Leading positive relationships and dialogue with principal internal and external stakeholders interested in the business from a safe and legal perspective (e.g., HSE, DVSA, Local Authorities, Trade Associations).
  • Ensuring all incidents and accidents are fully investigated by trained, competent colleagues, with escalation according to severity, and liaising with external stakeholders such as emergency services and media as needed.

  • At least Nebosh Level 3 or equivalent qualification

  • Auditing qualifications and experience
  • Environmental risk qualifications
  • Extensive accident investigation experience, including root cause analysis
  • Effective communication skills, both oral and written, with ability to negotiate and influence at senior levels
  • A valid UK driving license (company car may be provided)
