A leading manufacturer in Leeds seeks an experienced Health, Safety & Environmental Officer to foster a safety-conscious workforce and ensure compliance with health and safety standards. The role encompasses promoting safety culture, conducting risk assessments, and maintaining ISO compliance for maximum operational efficiency and workplace safety.
We are looking for an experienced Health, Safety & Environmental Officer to join Operations team in an established family-owned business in Leeds (LS11). Our client is a leading manufacturer and supplier of electrical power distribution equipment and pioneers of super low loss amorphous transformer technology.
The Role:
This is a new role working with our HSE Manager, as HSE Officer you will be based at our sites in Leeds and assist with all aspects of HSE practices and compliance. You will work towards improving health and safety promote a safe working environment and a safety-conscious workforce and ensure safety policies are adopted and adhered to.
Key Responsibilities:
To help drive a positive culture of Health, Safety and Environment across the site.
Proactively identify, assess and evaluate current and future regulations and health, safety and environment.
Working towards daily management and compliance for ISO45001 and ISO14001.
Facilitate assessments from the certification body, customers, and other interested parties.
Work towards continued development of the HSE Committee.
Maintain Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) to measure the effectiveness of compliance programs and evaluate trends.
Monitor environmental impact and ensure compliance with environmental regulations and standards, adhering to ISO14001.
Produce monthly reports, newsletters and bulletins where required.
Challenge any unsafe practices and behaviour across all departments.
Assist in the management of waste and help to reduce disposal where possible.
Working to evaluate environmental risks that may affect the Companys operations and assist with the preparation of robust improvement plans to ensure compliance.
Ensure the business operates in compliance with legislation, specifications, ACOPs, guidance and standards for Health and Safety, keeping up to date with relevant legislative requirements.
Assist with the maintenance of its accreditations by ensuring all departments are adhering to and are familiar with relevant policies, procedures and documentation.
Ensure all HSE Policies and procedures are in place and introduced to new starters
Promote a culture of safety first on-site; provide guidance; advice and understanding for compliance and regulatory requirements.
Carry out regular risk assessments; identify workplace hazards; work cross-functionally.
Plan and ensure audits are carried out following legislation and corporate procedures
Assist with the investigation and report all accidents, incidents and near misses through the relevant channels and maintain a record of corrective actions
Carry out induction training for new staff and contractors
Develop and deliver internal training to employees for toolbox talks and topics such as hazard identification, emergency response, and safe working practices, encouraging employees to take responsibility for their safety and the safety of others.
Assist with developing and maintaining emergency response plans and evacuation procedures
Conduct internal safety audits both factory and site
Assist all departments in identifying risks and conducts risk assessment, Standard Operating Procedures, Job Safety Analysis and Method Statements
Attend safety meetings both internally and at site where required
Carry out customer visits/audits
Conduct first aid inspections
Arrange employee healthcare tests
Assist in the completion of customer pre-qualification questionnaires
Actively contribute to ESG and carbon policies
Carry out any reasonable ad-hoc duties requested by your direct Line Manager or the Management Team.

Skills, Knowledge & Experience:
Demonstrable work experience at a similar level in HSE is essential
Experience of working in an engineering/manufacturing environment is essential
NEBOSH qualification is essential
Experience of auditing
Experience of ISO 45001, 14001, would be highly advantageous
Industry knowledge in the Electrical Power Sector/manufacturing environment is preferable
Experience in dealing with RAMS is essential
Experience conducting inspections and audits.
Strong prioritisation skills
Proficient in MS Office particularly Excel
Continuous improvement capabilities
Good interpersonal skills with a can-do attitude
Strong communicator (all levels / internal and external customers/suppliers)
Attention to detail and due diligence
Good organisational skills and the ability to work in a fast-paced multitasking environment
