Job summary

Kenton Black Limited is seeking an experienced Health & Safety Director to set strategy and drive safety across the business. You will lead group-wide HSE policies, manage critical groundworks safety, and ensure compliance with UK laws and ISO standards, while mentoring senior HSE staff.

The role involves acting as the main liaison with HSE authorities and insurers, and leading investigations to foster a proactive safety culture across projects.

Qualifications

• Diploma in Health and Safety (or relevant degree).
• NEBOSH Construction Certificate is required.
• CMIOSH membership or working towards is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and evaluate group-wide HSE policies.
• Oversee hazards in groundworks including deep excavations and lifting operations.
• Ensure compliance with UK safety laws and ISO standards (ISO 45001, ISO 14001).
• Lead and mentor HSE managers, advisors, or inspectors.
• Act as primary contact for HSE, local authorities, insurers and main contractors.
• Lead accident investigations and RAMS reviews, driving a proactive safety culture.

Job description

I've partnered with an established groundworks and civil engineering contractor, looking for an experienced and driven individual to join them in the business-critical appointment of Health & Safety Director. You will be a board-level leader able to set safety strategy, manage compliance and drive continuous improvement across the business.

As a strategic leader, you will be expected to:

• Design, implement, and evaluate group-wide Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies.
• Oversee critical groundworks hazards, including deep excavations, heavy plant movement, lifting operations, and concrete/RC frame structures.
• Ensure adherence to UK safety laws, Construction (Design and Management) regulations, and ISO standards (such as ISO 45001 and ISO 14001).
• Manage and mentor internal H&S managers, advisors, or site inspectors.
• Act as the primary contact for the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), local authorities, insurers, and main contractors.
• Lead accident investigations, review RAMS (Risk Assessments and Method Statements), and drive a proactive safety culture.

This is a crucial appointment for the business. As a figurehead for Health & Safety, you be managing the team and working collaboratively to drive the business forward. You will be able to positively challenge to ensure the business moves forward.

Key qualifications include:

• Diploma in Health and Safety (or relevant degree)
• NEBOSH Construction Certificate
• Chartered Membership of IOSH (CMIOSH) (or working towards)
• Extensive senior-level experience acting as a Senior/Group H&S Manager, Head of Safety, or H&S Director within civil engineering or groundworks
