You will coach and mentor these professional staff to enhance service standards and ensure customer satisfaction. Additionally, you will work on projects aimed at improving our service offerings to enhance compliance with health, safety, and wellbeing standards. You will be responsible for driving the retention and expansion of our customer base, working closely with the Head of Health, Safety & Wellbeing.

Main Responsibilities

Your main responsibilities will include:

  1. Team Leadership: Lead and develop a team of Health and Safety Advisers, Design and Technology Support Engineers, and support the Health & Safety Support Officer to deliver a customer-focused, modern, and professional service.
  2. Expert Advice: Provide expert, professional, and ethical health, safety, and wellbeing advice to senior managers and customer leadership teams, supporting them in identifying and implementing effective improvement and transformation plans, including supporting emergency incident management within the council.
  3. Policy Development: Develop and implement health, safety, and wellbeing policies, operating procedures, and management tools to ensure legislative and regulatory compliance and support organizational objectives.
  4. Stakeholder Management: Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners (e.g., NHS, Local Resilience Forum, UKHSA, DHSC, DFE, HSE, and other enforcement bodies) to ensure effective information sharing and risk management.
  5. Learning and Development: Identify, develop, and deliver learning and development opportunities on health, safety, and wellbeing topics to ensure managers have the required knowledge and skills.
  6. Operational Management: Lead the operational management of traded activity, ensuring quality of service, commercial benefits, and traded growth, while supporting the Head of Health, Safety, and Wellbeing in maintaining over a £1 million traded income target.

They will have Chartered membership of IOSH or an equivalent professional registration and demonstrate a commitment to continuing professional development through training, research-based practice, and the expansion of their knowledge and experience.
  • Significant leadership and management experience, with a proven track record of leading professional advisors and managing complex issues and transformation projects within a complex environment.
  • Substantial experience in creating and maintaining effective and influential networks that collaboratively shape and deliver better health, safety, and wellbeing outcomes.
  • Demonstrable understanding of the political context of service delivery and its challenges in the public sector, ensuring effective support to Elected Members.
