Balfour Beatty plc is seeking a Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor to join the Regional Scotland team on the Netherton Hub project in Peterhead. The role supports the delivery of the UK HSW Strategy, investigates incidents, and helps to uphold Zero Harm standards across HVDC/HVAC works and civil engineering tasks.

You will engage with management to implement action plans, monitor KPIs, and contribute to tender responses.

Qualifications

• Diploma/NVQ/Degree in H&S or equivalent.
• Chartered IOSH membership or working toward one.
• Ability to investigate incidents.
• Strong understanding of UK Health and Safety regulatory framework and HS&W systems.
• Ability to prepare formal written reports on HSW topics.
• Ability to plan and manage projects.

Responsibilities

• Understand and support UK HSW Strategy delivery.
• Contribute to Zero Harm and Sustainability Action Plans.
• Support KPI delivery at project and business level.
• Assist bid teams with HSW responses for bids and PQQs.
• Investigate accidents, incidents and near-misses following BMS standards.
• Establish local risk-based SLAs with projects and review quarterly.
• Undertake regular site inspections per risk matrix.
• Record inspections and project performance using the Project Portal.

About the role

Balfour Beatty are looking for a Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) Advisor to join our Regional Scotland team at the Netherton Hub project in Peterhead.

This major infrastructure scheme includes HVDC and HVAC works, such as converter stations, a switching station, substations (400kV and 132kV), a new depot, and associated civil engineering works—earthworks, drainage, landscaping, access roads, and utilities.

The Health, Safety and Wellbeing Advisor will play a key role in ensuring the safe delivery of the project. They will provide efficient and effective advice,provide support and help to achieve our Zero Harm goals and uphold the highest safety standards for both Balfour Beatty and our client.

Subsistence/Location allowance package available to candidates working away from home with this role

What you'll be doing

• Fully understand and support delivery of UK HSW Strategy.
• Contribute to the implementation, delivery and review of the Zero Harm Action Plan and Sustainability Action plan
• Support the delivery of the HSW Key Performance Indicators at project & business level.
• Support work winning teams with quality & innovative HSW responses for bids, proposals and PQQs.
• Provide expert support to investigate accidents, incidents and near miss events in accordance with Balfour Beatty Group Standards and BMS requirements.
• In conjunction with operational management complete a local and bespoke risk based Service Level Agreement with each project which is kept under quarterly review.
• Undertake regular site inspections as per project risk matrix.
• Produce formal reports using the Project Portal to record planned & unplanned HSW inspections which review project performance against the UK HSWS Regulatory. Framework & UK Business Management System (BMS) requirements.
• Undertakes regular checks on Health and Safety Risk Management ensuring that appropriate risks and opportunities have been identified and are being implemented.

Who we're looking for

• Relevant H&S Diploma, NVQ or Degree (or equivalent level 6 qualification). May consider candidates with a certificate/qualification currently working towards one of these qualifications with relevant on-site experience.
• To have or be working toward Chartered Membership of IOSH.
• Ability to influence and promote a positive HS&W culture.
• Competence in incident investigation.
• Strong understanding of UK Health and Safety Regulatory Framework & experience in HS&W Business Management Systems.
• Ability to prepare formal written reports on HSW topics.
• Ability to undertake project planning and project management.
• Demonstrates commitment to continual learning to refine, further develop and apply expertise to add distinctive value to customers and Balfour Beatty.
• Broad experience of complex construction and civils project.
