Job description

The Home Office works to build a safe, fair and prosperous UK. We achieve this through our work on counter-terrorism, policing, crime, drugs policy, immigration and passports.

Corporate and Delivery Directorate works closely with the Home Office’s policy and operational commands to enable us together to deliver the department’s priorities. The directorate is comprised of different teams and professional functions, including Commercial, Finance, People, Portfolio and Project Delivery, Security, Estates and Information and Digital, Data and Technology.

As health, safety and fire management at the Home Office undergoes an ambitious transformation programme, we are seeking a Support Team Manager to provide operational management of commissions, data analysis, secretariat, and admin support.

This is an opportunity to be at the core of the central Health Safety and Fire Management (HFST) Team within the Home Office, dedicated to safeguarding the health, safety and fire management of current and future colleagues.

The Support Team Manager is a high-profile and demanding role, where you will be responsible for handling Parliamentary Questions (PQs) and submissions and commissions from the Permanent Under Secretaries (PuS) including but not limited to the Audit and Risk Assurance Committee (ARAC), People Committee and Executive Committee (ExCO).

You will exercise sound judgement, political awareness, and discretion in managing sensitive matters, advising senior stakeholders, and ensuring that operational goals are achieved efficiently.

The main functions of the role will include, but are not limited to:

  • Lead the HSFT Support Team, overseeing secretariat support, data analysis, reporting, and internal coordination.
  • Translate strategic objectives into clear workplans, ensuring team outputs align with departmental priorities and legal obligations.
  • Provide high-quality briefings and reports to senior audiences, including ExCO, ARAC, and cross-government partners.
  • Act as a trusted advisor to senior leaders, offering evidence-based insights to support informed decision-making.
  • Drive implementation of the 2025–2027 Health and Safety and Fire Strategies through collaborative leadership.
  • Manage responses to Parliamentary Questions, commissions, and submissions, ensuring quality, timeliness, and appropriate delegation.
  • Lead and develop a high-performing team, fostering inclusion, well-being, and alignment with Civil Service standards.
  • Promote compliance with health and safety policies, audit recommendations, and legal responsibilities.

Whilst you will report to the Head of Health, Safety and Fire Management, there will be an expectation that you will work across the functions within HSFT, as necessary.

Working Pattern

Due to the business requirements of this role, it is only available on a full-time basis. However, compressed hours are available.

Travel

Frequent overnight travel will be required within the relevant geographical region / and national to team meetings/events on a quarterly basis. Travel and subsistence costs will be reimbursed in line with standard Home Office policy.

This is an exciting opportunity for a confident and capable leader to help shape and drive strategic and operational delivery across a complex, fast-moving environment.

You’ll play a key role in supporting senior leaders, driving improvement, and managing a high-performing team that enables delivery of our priorities.

Working across functions and with partners inside and outside of government, you’ll influence decisions, promote best practice, and support inclusive, efficient, and impactful working.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead business planning, reporting and governance processes, ensuring timely delivery and strategic alignment.
  • Manage and develop a multi-disciplinary team, providing direction, coaching and performance support.
  • Provide high-quality briefing and advice to senior leaders, often working to tight deadlines.
  • Engage with a wide range of stakeholders, building strong relationships and promoting collaboration.
  • Support internal communications, engagement activities and organisational priorities such as health and safety, inclusion and wellbeing.
  • Drive continuous improvement and innovation in business processes, systems, and services.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant governance, risk and assurance frameworks.
