Purpose of the Role
The Health & Safety Advisor is responsible for ensuring that the project complies with all current H&S at work legislation, JGL IMS requirements, and clients' site-specific requirements.
This role is site-based at Hinckley Point C during the tunnelling phase and involves on-the-ground responsibilities.
The advisor helps create and maintain a safe and healthy working environment, motivating the workforce through proactive engagement and ensuring RAMS, briefings, and TBTs are fully understood and followed.
The Health & Safety Advisor will also cover all Safety Advisor duties as needed, with decisions on duties made by the project manager.
General Responsibilities
- Ensure personal and team safety.
- Promote Living Incident Free Everyday (LIFE).
- Understand and sign off on all RAMS and SOS Briefings.
- Respect colleagues and the public.
- Hold the appropriate qualification for your role.
- Report and investigate near misses, incidents, or accidents.
- Maintain a tidy work area and enforce housekeeping standards.
- Implement and enforce H&S policies.
- Use phones only in designated areas safely.
- Wear appropriate PPE at all times.
- Follow smoking policies; designated areas only.
- Handle COSHH materials correctly.
- Operate only authorized and trained plant or equipment.
- Manage psychosocial health at work (PSHW) risks, collaborating with SHEQ.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead by example in health and safety standards.
- Oversee all work by JGL employees ensuring safety and quality.
- Ensure compliance with company and client safety policies.
- Manage subcontractors' safety compliance.
- Ensure all workers are briefed on risks and have signed relevant documents.
- Conduct daily safety briefings and site inspections.
- Verify that method statements and risk assessments are current and followed.
- Ensure proper training and competence of all operatives.
- Recognize and reward safe work practices.
- Encourage feedback and continuous safety improvement.
- Report and investigate incidents, preserving evidence when necessary.
- Maintain safety records and documentation.
- Promote a safety-first culture, empowering workers to stop work if unsafe.
- Assist with emergency procedures and environmental management plans.
- Ensure safe access, egress, and plant operation.
- Collaborate with inspectors and advisors.
- Spend most of the workday on-site maintaining safety standards.
- Act independently and objectively.
Experience, Knowledge, Qualifications & Training
- Proficient in English, both written and verbal.
- Relevant experience and education, possibly including NEBOSH qualification.
- Understanding of relevant legislation (e.g., H&S at Work Act 1974, LOLER, PUWER, etc.).
- Experience managing health & safety on projects.
- Ability to maintain accurate records.
