Job description

Health Care Assistant - Ystwyth Medical Group

Working under the direct supervision of the practice nurses and strictly in accordance with specific practice guidelines and protocols, the healthcare assistant will assist the practice clinical team in the provision and delivery of prescribed programmes of patient care.

The successful candidate will be expected to work four days per week, ideally Monday - Thursday between 8.15 and 15.15.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties and responsibilities:

ECG recording

Lifestyle monitoring and brief intervention

Perform observations

Wound care basic dressings and stitch / clip removal

Administering injections & Vaccinations as per PSD

Blood Pressure monitoring

Diabetic foot screening

Processing & management of laboratory samples requested by the clinical team

Provide assistance with the collection of specimens

Help patients with mobility needs & provide support for elderly or impaired patients where required

Processing test results as delegated/instructed by the clinical team

Manage the clinical system workflow system as instructed by the clinical team / Practice Manager

Sterilising, cleansing and maintenance of surgical equipment

Surgical equipment and stock rotation

Preparing and maintaining environments & equipment before, during and after patient care interventions, including assisting GPs during the performance of various clinics

Assisting in the assessment and surveillance of patients health and well-being

We are a well established family friendly practice situated in Aberystwyth, a beautiful coastal area in West Wales, with an expanding patient population and a supportive clinical team comprising of 7 GPs, 3 Practice Nurses, 2 HCSW, ANP and ACP.

As part of our ongoing commitment to delivering excellent healthcare services, we are looking for a compassionate and enthusiastic Health Care Support Worker (or qualified Phlebotomist who is willing to upskill) to join our multidisciplinary team.

Person Specification
Experience
  • The ability to take and record basic clinical measurements, including blood pressure, temperature, weight and height.
  • Knowledge of infection control practices and health and safety regulations.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to build rapport with patients, families, practice team members and the extended MDT.
  • Good organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Have the ability to work both as part of a team and independently when required.
  • Wound care
  • Previous experience of working in a GP setting
  • The ability to travel between sites in a timely manner
Qualifications
  • The ideal candidate will have an NVQ level 2 or 3 in health and social care, or at a minimum hold a recognised certificate in venepuncture.
  • Additional NVQ / similar in healthcare related subjects
