Job summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Health Care Assistant to join the older adult in-patient service at Henneage Ward, Colchester.

The role involves assisting the professional team in providing care for patients in an in-patient environment. Under supervision of a qualified team member, you will also implement and assist with the evaluation of individual plans of care.

This position requires participation in a flexible rostering arrangement to provide 24-hour care.

Main duties of the job
  • To act as a Co-Worker under the supervision of a qualified nurse/clinician.
  • To deliver planned care to service users as identified by the nominated professional.
  • Assist qualified staff in monitoring patients' health (e.g., blood pressure, pulse, temperature, respiration, weight, drug and alcohol screening after appropriate training).
  • Assist senior staff in planning and delivering therapeutic and social activities for patients.
  • Participate in initial assessments, planning, implementation, and evaluation of interventions, ensuring patients' physical, psychological, and social needs are considered.
  • Provide individualised care under supervision, supporting patients' needs with appropriate interventions.
  • Ensure accurate documentation of care in patient files, stored according to policy.
  • Observe and report changes in patients' physical or mental health.
  • Contribute to managing and supporting patients exhibiting challenging behaviour.

Job responsibilities

  • Collaborating with partner organisations, service users, carers, and clinicians to deliver a 7-day, 24-hour service, including shift work as required.

The Mid and South Essex ICS collaborates across health, care, and voluntary sectors to improve health and reduce inequalities. Our HCA Academy supports onboarding and training for new HCAs, including a 5-day induction at Brentwood Community Hospital and subsequent mandatory training.

Person Specification
Education / Qualifications
  • Level III NVQ or equivalent, with a commitment to ongoing training.
  • Experience working with patients with mental health issues.
  • Attainment of the Care Certificate within 6 months of appointment.
  • Experience working in a team.
Knowledge
  • Basic understanding of mental health conditions.
  • Knowledge of multi-professional team roles.
  • Awareness of statutory and non-statutory agencies.
Skills / Experience
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivation.
  • Ability to organise activities for individuals and groups.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check

This role requires a DBS check due to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions) Order 1975.
